We have got rid of the "Reply" and "Quote" buttons

Buttons are not clutter.

But I guess this how we ended up with touch screens instead of buttons in cars, Tesla with no indicator stalk and reverse is a slider on a screen.

Office ribbon and apps where it's only shows you buttons for where you are, but you don't know where to go without the buttons.

In glass fingerprint sensors on mobile phones which don't work.

But don't quote me on that....

Tbh I have no preference, but it's not consistent with other sites if having a common lexicon is of interest.

Me apparently

The problem is that when you hit the button it quotes the entire post and this is clutter.

On other forms locking what can be quoted is used to prevent people editing posts to mispresent. Note you can quote as many times you like and edit it.

Have you noticed that there is a lot less clutter since we got rid of the buttons which quoted the entire post?

If you could use it properly under the old scheme, then you are IT literate enough to know how to highlight the bit in the post you want to reply to and reply to it. So, really there is no change at all for those who were actually using it properly except that you are now quoting only the relevant bit of the post and not the entire post which makes it better for everyone.

but it's much less convenient on a phone, having to fiddle with what you're highlighting, in the absence of a mouse. Especially if you've got fat fingers.
My experience is as described here. It's just not worth the number of clicks fussing about to highlight the right part.

So you quoted the whole post and the rest of us had to figure out which bit of it you were referring to?

Or you were referring to the post in general and thought that it was ok to fill up your short reply with a re-run of the entire post?

It is a lot less cluttered now and much easier for anyone following the thread not to have to read the same post over and over again, if it's quoted in full over and over again.

Quoting the whole post is the behavior you wanted to prevent. I am saying that now after the change it is often not worth quoting at all. It's easier to just type my reply below than fiddle about with the quotes unless it's really necessary.

So the change has had the desired effect.

I had not noticed that.

Could you link me to them so I can check them out. For those affected, it should happen only once.

There is an add-on we can buy which changes the Reply button to bring the person into the Reply window without quoting the post. I didn't think it was necessary, but if people don't understand the following, maybe it is.

By the way, how do they reply when they can't see a reply option?

There are a few people posting regularly who can't seem to get the hang of the new approach for some reason. And yet they manually copy text from preceding posts to cite it which is actually more work than using the "select text and hit Reply" approach to quoting. Strange...

I just replied to a thread and was wondering where the quote button had gone, so I c/p-ed the post I was replying to and used the quotation function in the reply. I hadn't noticed the "reply" flag when I highlighted the text, but I think "quote&reply" might be clearer if that's something that can be changed.
