Greatest opening lines to a song

Is it a sin to say that I prefer the cover by Disturbed?
Is it a sin to say that I never heard of Disturbed never mind their (admittedly very good) cover of the song? In all fairness though if you put an orchestra as backing on any song it's going to sound pretty damn good!

I only heard of them recently. It's a great cover.

The BeeGees, a family beset by tragedy.

"Barry Gibb and his brothers wrote hits for many others.

They include 'Grease' by Frankie Valli from the movie of the same name, 'Woman in Love' by Barbra Streisand, 'Emotion' by Samantha Sang, 'If I Can't Have You' by Yvonne Elliman, 'Heartbreaker' by Dionne Warwick and 'Islands in the Stream' by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton."

They also wrote Chain Reaction for Diana Ross. They were also very technically innovative as recording artists.

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
contemplating a crime.
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain.
Don't bother asking for explanations
She' ll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat.

The year of the cat ....by Al Stewart
Brilliant song..

"T'was the winter of 65
I was hunger, just barely alive"

The song made famous by the singer who inspired a horney young Bob Dylan to write a few protest songs in order to get into her knickers. Afterwards he reverted back to his usual fare of exceedingly well crafted but bitter songs about his ex-lovers.

In the same vein...
Not really. Lazing was cleverly written. Money’s too tight is just a collection of lazy tropes.
I been laid off from work.
My rent is due.
My kids all need
Brand new shoes
It’s just a poor country music song in disguise. The next verses are even more crass.

So I went to the bank
To see what they could do.
They said "Son, looks like bad luck
Got-a hold on you"
.

Because that’s what banks say.

Money's too tight to mention.
I can't get an unemployment extension.

Not really a thing but I guess it rhymes.

How about giving us an opening line to a song that You do like !!!

Guess who just got back today
Them wild - eyed boys that had been away
Haven't changed , had much to say
But man , I still think them cats are crazy.
They were asking if you were around
How you was where you could be found
Told them you were living downtown
Driving the old men crazy.

Thin Lizzy....The boys are back in town...

When I passed you in the doorway
Well, you took me with a glance
I should've took that last bus home
But I asked you for a dance...

Thin Lizzy... Dancing in the Moonlight.

Is it okay to say I really don’t like Phil Lynott’s voice? That kind of nasal quality, does nothing for me.

I'm not sure what all the references are in your post, but to be clear the song was written and recorded by the band that became "The Band", at that time called "The Hawks". Robbie Roberson is credited as the writer and below I've quoted the entire 1st verse.

I'm assuming the lady in question is Joan Baez, who like others including Dylan, lived for a time with the musicians who were to become "The Band" in a big rented house in upstate New York. The house they all lived in was referred to as "Big Pink" by the locals due to its size and colour. The locals also referred to the group of musicians living there as "the band", thus giving "The Band" their new name and their first albumn its name, "Music from Big Pink".

"Virgil Caine is the name and I served on the Danville train
'Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again
In the winter of '65, we were hungry, just barely alive
By May the tenth, Richmond had fell
It's a time I remember, oh so well"

Saw Rick Danko in Whelans in 1999 and Garth Hudson ( part of Burrito de Luxe ) in Ballymore Eustace ! in 2007.
Always loved the Band .

Deberee deb ‘n deberee deb x 4

Oh Debora , always looked like a zebra
Your sunken face is like a galleon
Clawed with mysteries of the Spanish Main , oh Debora.
