Are there any decent newspaper left?

This doesn't really surprise me but it does annoy the hell out of me. I've noticed over the past few days that the tragedy in Omagh is being reported on by some of our broadsheet newspapers in a sensationalist and very possibly inaccurate manner. I would expect this from tabloids but is it just the case that all newspapers now contain the same trash just in different formats? In this case how can newspapers have front page headlines claiming as fact things like the father being the prime suspect when the investigation is only getting under way and no suggestion to this end has been made by the PSNI? Why can't the papers leave any rumours out of it and wait for some hard facts to emerge? Even a hard lesson like the Liam Lawlor gaffe doesn't teach these guys anything!

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

I thought it was just one broadsheet which was doing its usual tabloid-esque job on the Omagh story. The problem is that it continues to sell so many copies.

As far as i could see the rest seemed to be steering clear of any speculation or merely reporting the PSNI were playing down "media speculation".

I haven't checked today's though..

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

I always find it funny how the broadsheets are continually looked at as superior reads, when the style of writing and columns etc have increasingly become similiar to tabloids, (I exempt the sun from that cause it really is in a world of its own when it comes to reporting and I use that word loosely)

A decent broadsheet? It may have it's detractors but I still think The Irish Times is the only true, quality newspaper produced in this country.

In fact I think it's one of the best on these islands.

I reckon there has been an anti-FF bias in a lot of the IT reportage in the last while, particularly since just prior to the election. I suppose it acts as a counterbalance to the writings of a certain senator..

I think that's probably a fair enough comment - but most papers will have some sort of angle. I suppose was referring more to the general quality of the writing/reviewing/photography etc. Also, political partisanship aside, I think the Times is less sensationalist than most "quality" broadsheets - The Guardian, to name one, I feel has it's own form of sensationalism - even if it's not inspired by the lowest common denominator.

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

noticed that Irish Daily Mail is trying to bring English type journalism into this country for example attacking Bertie Ahern at every opportunity with weird headlines and such. Journalist seem to see themselves as guardians of something sacred which is the truth. Dublin(media politicions) to me and I don't live there seems to have unhealty and an incestous mix between media and media and media and politicions. A journalist who used to work for one paper leaves for another paper his articles are attacked and the only reason is because of something personal. I think also that for want of a better term the golden age of journalism is over that papers want to fill the paper with nonsense just to fill it.

I'd agree but the op-ed pieces (under which heading I would include William Reville writing about religion/theology or attacking Dawkins yet again in the "science" column  ) and habitual tendancy to exhibit Dublin middle class biases in articles (reportage and op-ed) can be cringe inducing.

Some "local flavour" aside, I honestly think there is very little difference between this paper and the original - which I think is a repugnant, xenophobic little collection of sheets TBH.

Yes, I agree there is a tendency towards this.

Some of the op-ed articles in the Irish Times defy belief (Vincent Browne's weasling justification of Muslim suicide bombings is a standout). Although, op-ed pieces are by definition expected to reflect the biases of the author.

I'd also say that they were seriously compromised in the neutrality of their reporting on property-related issues by their decision to purchase myhome.ie.

I used to consider The Sunday Tribune to be a "decent paper" but they actually fired their business editor for running an article that upset one of their advertisers!

Have you ever read Mark Steyn (does he still feature in the IT)!?

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

All fair criticisms I'm sure - but I'll still take the Times, warts an' all.

Is there really anything better?

I have indeed read the man's ramblings, although he hasn't featured in the IT in a while.

If you're missing him though, you can always vote on his blog to have him returned - as 193 people already have!

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

but should honesty and intergerty be staple princibles in reporting and publising of any newspaper whether its left wing, right wing or liberal.

Re: Is there any decent newspaper left?

No, Clubman, Mark Steyn doesn't write for the IT any more. It used to be great crack reading all the letters sent in by liberals up in arms about his views. Charles Krauthammer writes a Monday column for IT -He could be described as "Mark Steyn Lite" I,for one, miss Kevin Myers, but there's no way I'd buy the Indo just to read him..

I gave up reading the Irish Times when one of its reporters spouted politics time + time again in its sports coloumns. It may have been a good paper 30 or 40 years ago but not now.
