I wonder if some of them are group returns ie some GAA clubs collect them and do the returns as a way of fundraising? And a lot of people buy water if their domestic supply is not great. The fact that the bottles and cans are not crushed always makes the volume look like more than it is too.

I'm always surprised at how many cans and bottles people have to return.
Yes this is one of the things I had to adjust to, I might have 1 or 2 two litre bottles a week when we go shopping and for the most part,
there's nobody at the machine and the transaction is quick and painless
But there are times when you arrive at the machine and there's one person or two with bin bags of returns and it does my head in ;)
So I've had to remember that not everybody lives the way I do and walk away do my shopping and come back to the machine 10 minutes later

I've never done returns and I do buy them. I couldn't be bothered with the hassle for a few Euro. I just put them in my green bin like I always did and they get recycled just the same. I'm not sure what the net increase in recycling is but I'd say it's minimal.

It has really brought it home to me how much minerals people are drinking and its no wonder we have an epidemic of diabetes coming down the track. I've been told by so many medics that its a runaway train and people just aren't listening. I can't drink any minerals at all because I have to watch my sugars so carefully :(

Cant you give them to some charity?

I put them in my green bin and they are recycled. If I stored them up for a month it would amount to a couple of Euro at most.
Or you could just leave them on the roadside outside your house as some passer-by will be more inclined to pick them up and recycle them,
now that there's the added incentive of a couple of euros in it for them, its the circular economy ;)

We have let the bottles accumulate. I heard that the local GAA were going to collect them but no sign of it yet so I’ll have to brave the queue and bring along my bin bag full.

In the office we have a separate bin for them and they go to charity. Great idea for an office, few will be bothered with taking them home or storing them in their lockers and returning them to the local Tesco when they are in the office next. (Most of us are only on site once or twice a week so we don’t have designated desks you could leave them on)
