Who gets a vote for the Seanad election

just a cut and paste from irish times article explaining seanad election and how the electorate is so exclusive, most of the hot air is about the university electorate but the fact that 43 senators are elected by only 1169 voters and 11 are appointed by the taoiseach. Also they multiply this vote by a 1000 which I didn't know about before which gives the illusion of a large vote base as that's whats reported when they publish seanad results
"
Who elects the 60 Senators?
Incoming TDs (160), outgoing Senators (60) and local authority councillors (941) a total of 1,169 voters, elect 43 Senators on five vocational panels in what is one of the most exclusive electoral clubs in the world.

This is such a small electorate that the votes are multiplied by 1,000 as otherwise they would be counting fractions of votes in later vote transfers."

Utterly delighted to see Hazel Chu get her come uppance as well. There will be a party in a school in Carlow given her craven cowardice in not appologising to them for some appalling and factually incorrect comments she made in the past. Someone who can dish it out but who couldn't deal with a pushback

Possible Taoiseach nomination for Zappone?

(sounds like a can of fly killer from the 70s?)
Michael Martin doesn't owe anything to zappone why would he resurrect her political career? there are alot more deserving candidates, failed ff candidates, also Cathal berry would be alot higher up in the pecking order than zappone

That's because those 1169 people are elected by the people through elections in which everyone can vote. The fact that university graduates get to elect senators is elitist and anachronistic. That's why there's so much "hot air".

The same hot air would be generated if, for example, people who pay more than €100,000 in income tax elected a panel of senators. Such an arrangement would be equally unfair.
