Which oven?

We are thinking of renewing our cooker. At the moment we have a calor (bottled) gas cooker as we have no mains gas and there would be no likelihood of it ever coming to our remote house.

We've been thinking of getting a separate hob and oven as this would suit things in the kitchen.

So, which oven (not the hob just the oven part) has the lower running costs? Bottled gas or electricity? I can't seem to find any comparisons on the net anywhere but maybe somebody here knows where this information is.

We have two Bosch ovens; one is a combination microwave and multifunction oven and the other is a multifunction oven. In the two years approx. since we did the kitchen we have only used the combi oven. Don'task me how the microwave works as there is no turntable in the oven. Great bit of kit my wife tells me.
From memory they cost about £600 each from MFI.
 
Thanks BillK but I'm not sure if you have answered my question. I was trying to find the comparative costs of bottled gas and electric ovens. You don't say what yours are and what the costs are?
 
hey Pal. The reason no one answered you is cos no one could care less. If your worrying that switching an oven on is gonna cost you some money then try roasting your turkey over a candle.

:( I think it's more likely that people don't know.

To the original poster - oven performances vary so much that it's very difficult to give any kind of meaningful answer. I have very little idea how much it costs to run my (electric) oven or how that would compare with gas; I selected it on the basis of its energy rating, and because electric ovens usually heat more uniformly than gas ones and so are better to cook with for most things. I have a gas hob, but we're on mains gas so it's much easier.

In your situation, given that you'd also have the additional hassle of getting bottled gas, I'd definitely go for electric - even for the hob (and I'd probably get an induction hob).

every response keeps you at the front of the queue, so even the unhelpful, negative ones have there uses.
 
My point is that that the running costs are what they are.
Who would bother to measure one against the other and choose on that basis. No one I say.
The selection attributes are functionality and appearance.

Well if that was the intention then a more positive response would also do the same thing, would it not?

Hmmmmm. I found places where running costs different electric ovens are compared. But not gas with electric. Maybe it might just be helpful to many people to work this out, or point out where the information is if this has been done already. Don't you think?

Anyway for those of us forced to use bottled gas in this country it IS worthwhile know how much an oven will cost to run over its life. So I intend to keep trying until I find the answer. If yo can help that'd be great.

Both our ovens are electric; I have no idea of comparitive costs between this fuel and bottled gas as where I live in England is on mains gas.
I can tell you that the combi microwave cooks things very quickly and should therefore be relatively cheap to run.

In a remote area, I'd be more concerned about being completely dependent on a single energy source in winter-time particularly.

If the electricity goes at least with a bottled gas cooker you can have a cup of tea and some hot food (and even heat from the oven at a pinch).

All ovens have an energy rating on them now. All you have to do is go into a big DID or such other shops you can do the comparisions yourself - i.e. if it is A rate the running costs are relatively low and so on. Sometimes you can get a dual fuel cooker where the hob is gas and the oven is electric and the oven can be quite efficient but the gas hob slightly less efficient - hence it might get a B energy rating. If I was buying an piece of equipment i.e. white goods the first question I would ask is what it's energy rating is and obviously the price to go with it. . Best of luck with your purchase.

I agree totally. I already have a solid fuel range for that reason. I will also be sticking with the gas hob so I can always boil an egg or make a cup of tea. It's really what is the best in terms of running costs for the oven.

I have read about energy ratings. But if a bottled gas oven is A rated is this only in comparison to other bottled gas ovens. Or does it also mean the energy rating is comparing gas with electric? And is it mains gas or bottled gas?

My problem is that bottled gas is very much more expensive than mains gas so even an A rated gas oven using bottled gas might be way more expensive to run than an A rated electric oven.

As I said to you on the other forum where I asked this question, if you have no helpful comments why bother posting? Obviously you just go round forums doing this. I guess you must be a sad person.

dreamerb, thanks for the reply. I can easily get gas and always have a spare bottle. But bottled gas is a very expensive way of getting gas into our homes. I have read that it can be five or six times more expensive per unit that electricity. That would be a significant difference over the life of an oven. hence my initial inquiry.

Does anybody know how much bottled gas is per unit for oven cooking, say roasting a turkey for five hours on 180? What would be the difference for an electric oven and a bottle gas oven?
