Eating sweeties, not flossing/ using interdental sticks, alcohol, smoking, not brushing for 2 mins twice a day , having one set of teeth to last for up to 80-90 years. I'm not a dentist but thats a good list for starters.

how do we know if the flouride is working,

There have been many studies showing it results in 50-60% reduction in decay.

There have been issues in the past with fluorosis as a result of overexposure, but chronic fluorosis would require many years exposure at >25 times the maximum level permitted in Ireland.

Good to know our €5 million is well spent then, I'm not concerned about flouridation from a health perspective risk, more from a cost effectiveness.
