RIP Thread for Notable People

Former Scotland, Manchester United and Manchester City striker Denis Law - the only Scottish player to have won the Ballon d'Or - has died at the age of 84.

Ah no , not the Law man .
Saw him break my heart when I was a kid when he scored a hat trick against Waterford in a European Cup tie in Lansdowne.
He famously played holding the cuffs of his jersey in his hands , half the kids in De La Salle Waterford adopted that fashion .
He went golfing the day that England won the World Cup , he just couldn’t bear it .
May the sod rest gently on him , you were a jewel Denis .

I've just come across this Guardian piece on his life in pictures...

Marvellous pictures which also feature three players who played for Waterford - Bobby Charlton , David Herd and Shay Brennan .

Actually The Clown Prince (like many Scots) had quite a good business career going in his Manchester United days. He imported carpets and was I think an agent for Italian menswear in UK - he got a taste for fancy clobber in Italy.

I think he was closer to 5'11" than the 5'9" quoted on the web for him. I mean Bestie and Charlton were 5'9" and Law's above them by 2" clear in many side by side photos.

I see the last surviving member of The Band has gone for the very Last Waltz. Saw him live a couple of times over the years - including with The Band at those shambolic but still brilliant shows at The Olympia back around 1997 or so....

Didn't know The Band reformed after 1978. Like many I taped the double LP as a student then and had those old rubbishy numbers like Dixie Down and It Makes No Difference stuck in my head for months.

I recall seeing Robertson solo performance posters in South Clapham in 1987. Also saw posters there promoting Denis Lacorriere from Dr Hook. Seemed to me then that these guys were easing themselves out of the business but not quite giving up on small tours and all that went with them.

Considering all they went through  most of these boys lived to a good age.

That’s sad , saw him play in the Ballymore Inn with Sneaky Pete Kleinow in Burrito de Lux.
Saw Rick Danko in Whelans .
Always loved the Band , probably one of the most influential bands ever .
