The costs of both have actually ballooned. This has been obscured by the fact that the taxpayer is picking up more of the tab - for now.
The cost of producing and transporting goods have also ballooned.
You could probably say the same about an increase in the death rate. "Terrible about all those poor people but at least it's the queues are shorter"With the consequent reduction in the negative externalities to the benefit of the whole of society and in particular to the producers and logistics suppliers who don't freeride.
