This point was never addressed. Without quotes, the conversation is impossible to follow. Any large quotes are collapsed, so they don't take up too much space on your screen.

People should not quote the entire post when replying.

How does quoting too much make threads unnavigable?
On arriving at the site this morning, the lack of reply and quote buttons has me thinking every thread was closed to replies. I wonder what newcomers will think?

It just fills the post with unnecessary content.
It should be much cleaner and clearer without quoting the full post in every reply.

Another advantage is that people often quoted the entire post and then wrote their reply within the quoted text. I would have to edit the post to take the response outside the quoted text.

I thought you could do that before by deleting what you didn't want. I guess people didn't bother. Which I suppose is the entire point of changing it.
This forum has always worked pretty well. Some other forums are an absolute car wreck in terms of being broken.
I really think removing the quote and reply buttons makes the forum far less user friendly and is solving for a problem that doesn’t really exist.
By way of an alternative approach, if somebody does quote an entire post would it be possible to collapse it to the first, say, three lines?

It does exist.
It fills up the post with content which is usually just not relevant.
I often don't know if the quoted post is relevant and have to unfurl it to read it.
Why is it user unfriendly the way it is?
To reply, just start typing in the box.
Edit: This post is an example of why it is better. I was "forced" to select the relevant bit of your post to quote to reply to.
If I had hit reply, anyone reading my post, would have to read your entire post again.

My first thought when I saw the change was that the thread I was reading had been closed to replies. I'd guess a new user (even one familiar with other forums) would think the same.

Just wondering does it all add to your costs in running the forum? Some of the long posts regularly quoted must add up over the years.

To quote some text , highlight that text and the Reply button will appear e.g.
