I agree. All this talk of what the "norm", "going rate" and "etiquette" in this context, and the sort of keeping up with everybody else that it seems to imply, seems anachronistic to me personally. But each to their own. If people are happy to shell out €500 or whatever go ahead. If they are not then don't do it under (internally or externally driven) duress.
