Maybe there wasn't as much stuff in the suburbs during the 80s (like shops etc) so people were forced into the centre of the city?
I guess that's a possibility and something I hadn't considered.

Yup, traffic is down pretty much across the board in the city centre my contacts inform me. Commercial traffic in particular taking a clobbering around the docklands area. East link traffic down also.
Not materially so, IMHO.
I cross the Eastlink at rushhour, heading north, and the traffic volume are much as they were last year, and 5 years ago.
If I were Traffic Czar of Dublin for a day, that fceking roundabout in front of the Point would be gone !
