Greatest opening lines to a song

You made a fool of me
But them broken dreams have got to end.
Hey woman ,you got the blues.
'cause you ain't got no one else to use .
There's an open road that leads to nowhere
So just make some miles between here and there.

ELO....Evil woman.

On a related note, and without using Google, what have Roxy Music's Virginia Plain and Squeeze's Up the Junction got in common?

Eurythmics

Here comes the rain again
Falling on my head like a memory
Falling on my head like a new emotion
I want to walk in the open wind
I want to talk like lovers do
Want to dive into your ocean
Is it raining with you?

Sting

I don't drink coffee, I take tea, my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York

On the first day of March it was raining
It was raining worse than anything that I have ever seen
I drank ten pints of beer and I cursed all the people there
I wish that all this rain would stop falling down on me

As far as a single opening line goes, I can never get away from:

There are some things you can't cover up with lipstick and powder

"In an unfamilar bed
In an unfamiliar room
There's a throbbing in my head
I've succeeded I presume. " The Blades, Downmarket

"Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall
She sees a bartender in a pool of blood
Cries out, "my God, they killed them all" Bob Dylans ,Hurricane

"Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Hoo, they're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"
Ooh, they point the cannon at you,Lord"..CCR Fortunate Son.

"She came from Greece
She had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College
That's where I caught her eye." Pulp, Common People.

My mini Playlist of great openers

Say your prayers, little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone
I tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
'Til the sandman, he comes

Enter Sandman - Metallica

"The light color in the room
The sunshine seeping in
Doesn't mix with the black of
Death's angel looming in"

Mistress by Red House Painters

Can anyone beat that?
Not sure if I can beat it but here are a few that I'm surprised haven't been mentioned so-far
These are all songs that have a special meaning to me and bring back happy memories
And in no particular order

I was reminded how great this song was when it was sung at the closing ceremony of the Olympics

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I travelled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Frank Sinatra - My Way

This one always reminds me of my time in Spain especially towards the end of my stays

They say it's a matter of time
A thousand days and the sun won't shine
Before I come back to you

And I'm happy, nothing's going to stop me
I'm making my way home
I'm making my way

Tom Rosenthal - Go Solo

Probably one of the greatest feel good songs out there

Tonight, I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive
And the world, I'll turn it inside out, yeah!
I'm floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now
Don't stop me

Queen - Don't Stop Me Now

The final two are from an album that for me has to be one of the greatest albums of all time and one that could be the soundtrack of my life

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Pink Floyd - Time

And finally a song that sometimes just says it all without saying anything

Pink Floyd - Great Gig In The Sky

Enjoy!!

On candy stripe legs the spiderman comes
Softly through the shadows of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly a movement in the corner of the room
And there is nothing I can do
When I realize with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight

Lullaby - The Cure

We decided not to have kids but going by what my nieces and nephews have told me and what I see and read in the media,
"teenage life" these days is a lot more complicated and difficult compared to when I was a teenager
Back then all I really thought about was music, smoking & drinking and last but not least girls,
the first two were easy to come by but the latter didn't really take off until my late teenage years

In September 78 the BBC radio DJ John Peel played for the first time a song by an Northern Irish band
It was a short song of two minutes and twenty nine seconds made up of two perfect rhyming versus and one chorus and a banging guitar rift
John liked it so much he did something never before done on the BBC, he immediately played it again saying "It doesn't get much better then this"
He went on to not only say it was his all time favourite song right up to his death in 2004 but also asked for the opening line to be engraved on his headstone

Written by teenagers for teenagers in a bygone era

Teenage Kicks - The Undertones

I'm glad their Springsteen quote was from Thunder Road, probably my favourite Bruce song (obviously the live version from the 1984 Box Set).
I'm also struck, in retrospect, by just how good the Bee Gees were.

It's easy to take things for granted but there is so much good music, of all kinds from all times, that just makes life better.
