Credit card needed for the US. I dont have one at present.. what do I need to know …

Any use?

I’m just wondering if anyone knows the best rates at present ?
As @Protocol said, at all costs avoid racking up debt on a credit card. Clear the balance before interest accrues. If you can't do this then don't get a credit card. Especially if you may have other debts already.
Credit cards can be a useful cashflow management tool if you clear the balance before interest accrues, but they are one of the worst and most expensive ways to borrow longer term than c. monthly.

Apart from all that, the links that I posted above list the interest rates applicable on some, most or all credit cards available on the Irish market at the moment.

Just get a ptsb credit card.

In fact, get two in case one stops working.
And pay two sets of stamp duty?
And run the risk of racking up debt on two cards?

If a card from a regular bank doesn't work then surely you can just call support?

And what are best options on market for me right now please . I’m a PTSB Customer . Thanks
Just offering this as an alternative. In the past I used credit cards for everything, literally every transaction I made, domestic and overseas. I still do for all domestic expenditure. However over the last few years the Irish banks have been steadily increasing the cost of using a credit card for non Euro transactions and it has actually become quite expensive. I now use an N26 debit card whenever I am travelling - there are no charges, the exchange rate matches XE.com (rather than the crazy made-up exchange rates the Irish banks use), it works everywhere I've been in the US and Canada including for swiping, contactless and handheld terminals, it works in the majority of Bank ATMs, I get instant notifications for all transactions to my phone and watch, the online accounts are instantly updated so I always know where I stand and the self managed security and fraud controls are light years ahead of anything the Irish banks offer. I always have other cards with me, including an Irish Euro credit card which I bring as a backup.

I should add that I clear my credit card every month. Last time I paid extortion interest was Feb 1992, and that was a bank error which was very promptly refunded !

Is a prepaid currency card like you can get at the post office any good to you? I've used them before all over the US alongside a credit card also. Handy for trips when you can load in a lot of spending money, then spend away like it's a credit card but no bill after!

I agree with the posters who suggested Revolut or N26. However, in some situations, a hold is required against possible spending, on a cruise ship or at an hotel, for example, and this can freeze quite a large chunk of funds on your debit card. I use my credit card for holds but make sure I pay the account with the Revolut card. I would suggest looking around for any credit card with decent rewards. I use BOI Aer Lingus credit card for the free flights etc.

My young student spent 6 mths in US and used Revolut for everything. Some food delivery services ,it couldn't be used for. All else was fine. I've used Revolut in the states also but my preference was Wise. As I recall there was a marginal savings benefit on weekend use, compared with Revolut. Really only came into play if settling large hotel bills etc on weekend. Agree with Slim above, I too use BOI aercard for holds etc.

I presume that the OP has a debit card already.

But they might need a credit card in some situations e.g. car hire.

That is the question here. Do N26 do a credit card?
