When it comes to cars i havent a clue.

€160 for standard car service. Said he changed oil and air filter and realigned steering.

Is this reasonable?

He also says i need two new front tyres, €85 each for 'middle of the road' tyres.

But seriously, the figures mentioned seem reasonable to me.
As ever though when they do the service/inspection they may find more things that need attention - that's just the way it works.

Can I ask what type of car the service was done on? Seems very cheap.
When you say "realigned steering" - what did he do , was it the tracking on the car ?

Sounds rather vague to me.

What mileage is on the car? This dictates what needs checking and changing according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

Did he change the oil and the oil filter? Did he change the engine air filter and the cabin air filter, aka pollen filter?

I don't understand "realigned steering", and, if the misalignment he detected caused irregular or excessive tyre wear, the single most important job that wasn't done was to replace the worn tyres. They are your only point of contact with the road and your primary source of control whether steering or braking.

It may be a great value service, but there isn't enough information to judge.

Depends - what exactly does a "full service" involve?
Official dealerships are usually going to be (possibly significantly) more expensive than other garages.

160 is good, I pay 155 but that's unusual round here. I've paid FAR more than that in the past for very poor servicing.

As for tyres, depends on the size. If its a bigger car or one with sports tyres, 85 is very good. If its a very small car with very simple small tyres 85 is ok.

Hello,

I'd add to the comments made by others:

- €160 sounds good. Is that a garage in Dublin, or one of the other cities, out of interest, as I suspect not?
- I also agree that good tyres, are essential. Don't scrimp on price, read up on the tyre manufacturer and model, ensure you've the correct speed rating etc.

Has anyone tried getting their car serviced up North? I've heard people say it's cheaper, particular at main dealers, and especially for high end cars, but haven't checked it out, myself?

I have a friend who brings his Audi to Belfast for servicing every year and is very impressed with the customer service as well as the quality of the service itself. It works out a bit cheaper but is obviously more challenging logistically.

I myself usually get my 5 year old Audi serviced by my local back street guy in Dublin but had a need a couple of years ago to have specialist work done by a main dealer.

Audi sandyford were a disaster both in terms of price and efficiency. I brought it to Belfast where the work was done cheaper and with at least some regard for customer satisfaction. I had to leave the car there for a couple of days so it involved a couple of train trips which was a bit of a pain.

The experience was still preferable to dealing with Audi in Dublin which is just a 5 minute drive away.
