Can I ripen Green Tomatoes?

Compared to last year, I have a bumper crop of tomatoes growing outside on the patio. However, they are not turning red, just brown. I am wondering if I can do anything with the green tomatoes to rescue them before they go brown. The weather forecast is good for this week, so should I just leave them outside and see if they ripen?

There are hundreds of them, at various stages of growth, and it's breaking my heart to see them turn brown instead of red - is this because of the rain or a disease? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

If there is a chance of sunshine, keep them outside for a while.

To ripen indoors, put them in a vegetable box and keep them dark by covering with newspaper. They will turn red but will not have the natural sugar that sun ripened tomatoes have.

You can also make green tomato relish, very nice with cheese.

My experience here is that they must be individually wrapped in newspaper.

put them in a brown paper bag with a ripe banana and leave them on the window sill

I suspect any of the above ideas would work. What worked for me was putting them(just a few at a time) in a brown paper bag on a sunny window sill.

And I`ll also vouch for the green tomato chutney idea. I don`t have a recipe to hand but it`ll be worth your while googling for one.

Delish!

I remember my grandfather used to wrap them in newspaper and put them in the hot press (airing cupboard) ...........nice flashback :)

put them in a bowl and leave them inside on a window cill (just make sure its a window thats gets alot of direct sunshine, thats what we have been doing for the last month or so works a treat.

Thanks for all your replies. With the good weather this week, I am going to leave some of the tomatoes outside to see what happens. I am also going to put some on a sunny window sill to see if they ripen.

Am also keen to try the green tomato relish - googled and got lots of recipes for this - but can anyone recommend a good recipe, where the relish will keep in the fridge for a few weeks/months? Many thanks again.
