Now the county council is buying up all 40 homes at Trusky West in Bearna, about 500 metres from the centre of the village and the local pier.

The development, which is under construction, is made up of a mix of three- and four-bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses, and one and two bed apartments.

This development limits the general public’s ability to purchase homes

No prices are available, but locals estimate such properties could fetch up to €500,000 on the open market.

Putting aside the location of these new houses, I am totally against the central Govt and/or the local authorities buying new houses from property developers.

The local authorities are using taxpayers money to compete against the same taxpayers in the market for new houses.

Instead, the LA should hire a contractor and build houses on its own lands. It should add to supply, not add to demand.

As it is a Gaeltacht area, it will be shocking if those granted these houses are not native speakers. No amount of gaelscoileanna in D4 will help the language if the native speakers cannot buy or live in their own locality.
I say shocking - but I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this came to pass.

I have moved the posts about housing asylum seekers to
