I have to say i was very impressed with Rovers performance and the whole look of the match As a Tallafornian it was great to see the stadium look so well on sky last night. I think rovers should be very proud of themselves!

Yes, as a Cork City FC fan Rovers did themselves and the league proud last night.

Shamrock Rovers provide a good argument for a fan based owership of a LOI club. The fans there have done a great job.

I saw a few clips on the news. I think it was very shortsighted of the rovers player(s) to basically hack Ronaldo down from a tackle from behind. He basically kicked him.

This is Real and they are not going to take well to having their best players potentially injured in pre season.

Expect that to be the last big name club that goes to rovers for a pre season game.

Awww poor Ronaldo

Real Madrid wanted a real game of football, thats why they chose a team like Shamrock Rovers who were already half way through its own league and who were fitter than them.

Expect that to be the last big name club that goes to rovers for a pre season game.

Real Madrid have said over and over again how happy they were with last nights match, it was a very good game for them to play to get their fitness up and to give the players a good run. Ronaldo himself said that Rovers were a very good team and it was a good match.

I can easily see Madrid coming back for a few years to come and expect a good few more teams too

You're completely right, the Rovers players should have asked him for an autograph and maybe a photo, they should have been honoured to be on the same pitch as Madrid especially since they are only league of ireland players......

Madrid wanted a match, not a training session, he wasn't particularly targeted or fouled throughout the 45minutes he played.

Personally I dont care about Ronaldo, or soccer in general. But from Reals point of view they wouldn't want to risk a 80m investment getting injured in a meaningless pre season game. And having players doing sliding tackles from behind won't have gone down well with Real.

Real might be saying that they are happy with the game in the press releases but I would be very suprised to see them come back or any other decent team going there for a pre seasons game.

I thought it was great to see a good physical game, no dramatics or diving from any of the rovers players. And it was fantastic when the Real player was booked for diving! It's a big change from alot of european football/amateur dramatics!

He kicked him? Are you serious????

Well that's the last time Madrid will leave Spain.

It was a nothing tackle.

Shouldnt Madrid have worn their away strip? Dont see why Rovers should have changed.

Madrid were the paymasters last night so it made sense. Rovers were not in a position to make any demands. They also brought over the ball that is used in the Spanish league.

"If I dont get my way I'm taking my ball home....."

Aren't Rovers supposed to be launching the kit they wore last night as their new away kit in a couple of weeks?

Shamrock Rovers who were already half way through its own league and who were fitter than them.

So that's why they only won by a goal.

That's like saying a local Rugby team are fitter than Munster 'cos they are playing at the weekend'

Was at the game last night and as my username suggests, I am a Madrid fan.

Really enjoyed it. Good to see Madrid play their full squad. And I don't think they were the least bit bothered about the tackle on Ronaldo. It was a firm but fair tackle. No complaints.

Rovers did the LoI proud. They played really well and showed that there is talented footballers playing here. Even better that it was seen on Sky TV. And their stadium looked the part, and will really be good when its finished.

Overall a really good night. Well done to all concerned.

An 80m investment is only any good to them if and when he produces on the field. Clubs either look at pre-season to boost fan base or to get a decent workout, I would imagine Real were looking for the latter.

I would say its obvious that Madrid didn't come to Ireland for the weather, or the massive soccer fan base.

I think they were attracted by 2 things - the facilities on offer at Carton House Hotel and the fact that they would get less attention if they were in some other country, and most importantly a hefty pile of cash for the appearance.

The tickets were €60 each - and 10,900 people were at the game. Assuming that there were quite a few freebies handed out, I'm guessing the game still raised €600k in gate receipts. Rovers got €30k, and I'm guessing Madrid and Platinum One split the rest, with Madrid getting the vast majority of it.

It will pay the wages for a few days anyway.

Doubt it even paid the wages for half a day! As far as I know it was a loss making exercise for Platinum one and for Carton House who were happy to get the publicity.

Madrid's current wage bill was published the other day at £1.7mill per week.

I'm sticking with half a week covered.

Then again, I am assuming they had to pay their own way over.

As far as i know Platinium one paid for everything and in return they got the ticket money. The guy from platinum one on the radio said this and that it was more an attempt to build the reputation of the company than to make a huge amount of money.
