hey folks

I'm lucky enough to be gettign away for a few days to the Girona area in the costa brava. I'm pushing 40 and will be on my own for the duration. Any recommendations on things to do and nighlife suitable for a man of my mature and sensible years?

Re: girona and it's environs

dont know about night life but if you fancy a day and night trip to not so far away cadaques would be cool. Its is trendy and very pretty. habour lined restaurants and all that. Probably busy but not wild.

Re: girona and it's environs

Besalú is a nice walled 'city' in the area - definitely worth a visit. Google it and see what you think.

Re: girona and it's environs

besalu and cadaques look nice alright, thanks. ... now to check out the bus routes! Any ideas on nightlife folks - the days ought to be fine, but I dread the idea of hanging out in half empty bars with nothing to do..

Ryanair's arrival and departure times are pretty awful for Girona. Do you stay overnight in Girona?

My advice is don't. You'll just feel sad and lonely.
I've been to the far and middle east and europe on my own and my advice is to think of this as a different type of holiday...early mornings and early to bed!

I love eating out on my own, but you need a good book, so you are content and relaxed and don't rush your meal and of course treat yourself to a very nice bottle of wine.

If you stay in a hostel or somewhere you might be more likely to hook up with other single travellers. Thus making the bar scene a more pleasant experience.

Look out for some tours to do...particularly walking tours or hikes.
A great way to hook with a few people for a while and not feel totally isolated.

I second the Besalu, also there is Figueres (?sp) where the Dali museum is...you could go on a guided tour of that.

I hadn't planned to, but will spend time there during the day. Still looking for my accomodation. Will check out the resorts. I get in about 10pm - just in time to get where I'm going, clean up and hit the streets to get my bearings *lol*

Mommah, I'm not too bothered about going out on my own.. I just dread a wasteland of empty bars.. I'll pass the time ok once there's folks my age or so around.

Depends what you're into but Lloret de Mar is their equivalent of Bundoran/Blackpool. V. souvenir shoppy, a bit more expensive and nightlife (on the beach) a bit wild.

Girona on the train isn't that far from Barcelona if you have a day and want to take a race in.

Have walked around Girona a little and it seems quite nice - a bit small. Check it out on lonelyplanet and see.

Re: Girona and it's environs

Hi All,
I'm just back from a 10 day fly-drive holiday with my partner. We picked up and dropped the car back to Girona airport.

If you aren't into beach holidays then Cadaques is still pretty enough for a day trip, but the drive to it is along narrow roads on the Creus peninsula. We didn't find too many good restaurants there and we found some particularly expensive and poor quality restaurants on the waterfront. One called Gritti's was particularly poor. We didn't like Cadaques, so we got out quickly.

We didn't venture to other spots on the Costa Brava as it wasn't our thing.

The walled medieval towns such as Besalu, Solsona, and Cardona are worth a visit. We stayed two pleasant nights in Cardona.

Perpignan is only 1 hour from Girona, and we headed inland from there to some interesting towns in the foothills of the French Pyrenees.

From a few fly drive holidays to Spain, I would pick the north west and Basque country to travel to.

If you're single then bar hopping and tapas eating in the likes of Santander, Bilbao and San Sebastian would be recommended. Absolutely fab food and drink in the port side bodegas of Santander. Great fun places too particularly if you have a bit of spanish.

Our favourite region though was Asturias.... http://www.casonasasturianas.com

Estertit is lovely, around an hour from Girona on the coast. No highrise but not a place that closes early. Lots of lovely bars around the harbour area you can enjoy a drink and meal until the early hours of the morning.

I would be interested to hear how your transport from Girona to the coast worked out?

I got in too late for the bus to the airport so had to get a taxi, but managed to find some like minded folks to share it so not too bad. Bus back from Lloret De Mar was a doddle...

I stayed there to be honest, too lazy to go elsewhere for my few days, but avoided the main beach... not such a bad place all in all.. better than I expected

go to cadaques and sitges.
Most of costa brava is built up and ranges from plain to ugly.

The problem is that the Ryanair flight arrives at about 11 p.m. Seems a terrible waste of money to pay for a hotel room for that night.

There are some wonderful places on the Costa Brava, far less built up than the South of Spain or Alicante. Girona is a lovely city and I really fell in Love with Tarragona (closer to Barcelona) but with such a beautiful old quarter. The drive further up the coast towards France is lovely.
