Hi

My PC is now virtually unusable due to a starting problem with Windows XP - may be malware but I'm not sure. It will start in safe mode.

I've come to the conclusion that the only option left for me is to reformat the hard drive. I've heard that it is actually not nearly as complex as some would have you believe and that the main thing is that instructions are followed precisely.

Is this true?

If so, can anyone provide a link to what they would regard as accurate, unambiguous, step by step instructions on how to do this?

Also, in a basic sense, I think all I need is the Windows installation disk?

Thanks

wiping the drive is easy, setting up everything again is the tricky part!

The windows CD will let you wipe the drive as part of the installation process. A quick google will give you loads of help on reinstalling windows

Ok, but is there a particular site/advice that you would recommend?
It's just that many seem to describe slightly diferent ways of doing things.

I suppose Microsoft's own site under their FAQ would be a good bet - no?

what version of windows is it and have you the cd?

OK thanks - will have a look.

One question - how do I get the drivers if I don't have internet access?

download the drivers from work to a memory stick if possible, or at a mates house. If it's a brand name pc go to their website and get them from there. If it's a no name clone, you need the knowledge to find out what kit you have.

if you format the hard disk you will lose all your files and documents.did you try to run a spyware program from safemode if it is this that is causing the problem this may solve it. also if you installed any new hardware or software just before the problem try uninstalling it in safemode and rebooting.

Before you take such drastic action and decide to install XP again, I believe you should first of all try this.

1. If your computer is Dell - ring technical support and ask for help.

2. If it is another make like HP etc , - look for technical support from them

3. Contact your broadband supplier - they may help you solve this problem . Eircom directory enquiries will give you contact number for technical support.

There is a way of solving your problem while your PC is in safe mode .( but I dont know the finer details )

Remember , if you decide to re-install using an installation disk - you may need the 25 character product key. ( I know that it always asks me for this key .

I'm a bit out of pratice but it used to be possible to reinstall on top of your old system by booting to the operation system CD and using the repair features?

PS . Another possibility is to also try in safe mode to use MSCONFIG.exe to block all start ups etc, then try normal start and then gradually switch back in services etc.

Thanks guys - Don't mind about losing data BTW, I can live with that.

It is a Dell PC as it happens but from experience, couldn't be arsed going with the customer support thing.

Have tried everything I can in safe mode - no joy. See here also.

I'm thinking I might leave this to an in-law who knows about these things rather than me mess something up.

Thanks to all for your input.

On the Dell PC hold down the "Ctrl" key and tap "F11" during early boot up.This will access the recovery partition which will format the drive and reinstall windows.

I like the sound of this - it makes it all sound very easy.

Is there much intervention involved by me or is the format/reinstall semi-automatic from this point?
