navan road area or marino/fairview?

We think we've narrowed down our search to these two areas, both have good schools and good facilities nearby. Any opinions on which way to swing it?

I don't know much about Marino or Fairview, but I grew up in the Navan Road area and loved it. Most of the estates are well and truly settled, having been there for years. The schools were good back in my day, and there are so many things for kids in the area (various sports teams, karate, ballet, Scouts, Brownies, Cubs, etc.) Transport links are excellent, although traffic can be extremely heavy at "rush hour". Being so close to the city centre is a bonus too. And then there is my absolute favourite part of living in that area - proximity to the Phoenix Park. I couldn't even begin to count the hours I have spent walking, cycling and having picnics there. I could go on and on and on ... but I won't ;) If you'd like to ask me more, though, please feel free to do so.

Marino / Fairview every time. Much closer to town. Easy access to M1 / M50, Connolly station, Clontarf Dart, Busses coming down the malahide road.

Loads of schools, shops, recreation areas (fairview park, St Annes park nearby) all within walking distance. If i could afford to live their i would deffo sell my car.

again marino/fairview and some great value to be had there compared to recent times. A nice community surrounded by Griffith Ave and the seafront, great excess to city centre by dart and bus, schools also have a great rep. The best of luck

Thanks for the feedback, my own thinking so far is;
The Phoenix park is my biggest attraction to the Navan Road, fairview park is not fit to wipe it's feet imho and St. Annes is lovely, but it aint in Marino! It is a handy drive or cycle away though as is the seaside.
There seems to be bit of buzz about Marino though and it does have a nice bunch of shops cafes and restaurants all within easy walking distance of each other.
Navan road has the Hole in the Wall which I love and Ashtown is a nice town centre but I get the feeling I'd be using the car more.
I like the option of the Educate Together School on the Navan Road.
Is Marino more trendy? Both have a serious amount of SUV mammies but maybe that's universal.
I guess they are both good places. It may come down to the house.
As for good value in Marino it may not look that way in twelve months, is half a million for a modernised 900sqft good value?

Spent an enjoyable time a few years ago in Marino so advice given with a pinch of salt. But would have to choose it over Navan Road every time. Phoenix Park definitely beats Fairview Park hands down. But for me a walk along the seafront in Clontarf would beat either and it really isn't that far. A stroll along Griffith Avenue the other direction brings you to other shops & restaurants and various schools in Drumcondra. Most of Marino is residential and quiet. So it depends what you're looking for but it's a safe settled area and yet you do benefit from the proximity to the city centre. As for the pretentious SUV yummy mummies, well there were a sprinkling of those when we were there. But it wasnt exactly Dalkey or Sandymount!

Realistically I think a car will still be necessary in either place. In Marino you still might want one to get to the park and ride at Clontarf Dart station. Apart from convenience for previous jobs, for us the pretty short drive on a sunny Sunday out to Sutton or Howth was the biggest benefit when we were there. We'd consider Marino again if we were starting a family and if or when the prices are right.

Noel have you also lived on the Navan Road?
I don't use my car that much but I'd never be without it now.

Dart station is in Fairview, not Clontarf
But I can't see how you'd have to drive from Marino to get there. Marino isn't a big area, and in some parts it'd probably be just as fast to walk it

The station is io Clontarf. Fairview ends at the end of Fairview park. If you lived on the top of philipsburge avenue it would take about 15 mins to walk to the station. On a bad morning the car would be a must.

To all intents and purposes Clontarf Road Dart Station (to use the proper name) is in Fairview. It's a good 1.5 miles from Clontarf 'village' but is practically across the road from the most easterly parts of Marino. The train station, along with WestWood, forms part of the boundary of Fairview park.

I disagree. The boundery for Fairview stops at the park. Westwood and the Clontarf Train Station are in clontarf. This has been previously discussed http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?t=77254 with the same outcome. Some stating it is in Fairview and some saying it is in Clontarf. Lets leave it at that i suggest.

The train station is to all intents in Fairview - what people consider as Clontarf is much further away in reality than Fairview is from the train station - much of Clontarf is nearer to Killester train station.

Hi moneygrower. At one stage I passed frequently through the area, but have never lived there. So I do probably have a bias towards Marino. But it does compare well to other parts of Dublin that I've lived in especially when rent/house prices are factored in. For us a big benefit was the amenities that you get in the areas that surround Marino such as Clontarf, Drumcondra etc.

To the above posters I was referring to station that is colloquially referred to as 'Clontarf DART station' by the majority of commuters and residents of North Dublin. Whether it actually lies in Fairview or Clontarf is probably not of much interest to most people.

I used to enjoy the walk to the station from Griffith Avenue. And during the summer I used to walk to the IFSC when possible. But some people might prefer to take the car to the station, depending on where in Marino they live. To clarify my original point a car would still be useful in Marino in general.

Do you have facts to back this up or is it just your opinion.

I know this isn't the thrust of this thread, but it is the Railway line itself that separates Fairview from Clontarf at the Clontarf Road. So the station is actually in both areas - it depends on which platform you're on! :)

The Westwood Club is definitely in Fairview though. It was built on land previously occupied by Dublin Corporation (it was a waste depot of some sort), adjoining (and possibly originally a part of) Fairview Park.
