Why isn't Richard Bruton leader of Fine Gael

I was watching him on Prime Time last night and he seems to be the only Fine Gael person who can take government ministers on head to head and sound credible. I can only presume he doesn't want the job because in my opinion he is the only one from the opposition capable of giving Brian Cowan a run for his money. Having said that Brian Cowan destroyed him in a head to head before the last election but he has to be a much better option as leader than Enda Kenny. As nice a person as Enda Kenny seems, he just does not inspire confidence and I think as we enter difficult economic times, we need a strong opposition to challenge the Government.

He should have been Leader year's ago -maybe he was not interested or just not selected. I cant see it happening now.

As OP says, Brian Cowen absolutely destroyed Bruton on TV&Radio in the last election campaign but I do like him as a politician. FG/Lab have a great opportunity to make some political progress with the economic recession but every time I hear Enda's voice, all I hear is "Blah, Blah, Blah". Nice fella I am sure but I dont want him to lead our country.

He seems like a nice guy, but I don't think he's very good tbh. I think the time may be ripe for the likes of Leo Vardak or Brian Hayes if they were so inclined.

While they both speak well they are way too inexperienced. I agree with comments above about Kenny and Bruton.

Richard is the best of the bunch but FG hardly have any depth of talent. Hayes sounded competent any time I heard him while he was in the Seanad however I haven't heard him much since he got back into the Dáil, I'm not convinced about him; as for Varadkar or Cretin, I wouldn't rate them at all. I despair, at election time, at the dearth of choice. The opposition are so poor. I feel compelled to vote so I swallow hard and work backwards from X (least deserving of a vote) to 1 (who gets my number 1 by being relatively less bad than the rest).

I don't think you are on your own there.

Leo Vardak?

Is that the guy that was on Vincent Brownes programme last night on tV3?

He was rubbish.

Joe higgins slaughtered him in terms of how he expressed himself.

Clearly that guy was out of his depth in debating skills.

Out of panic he then had a quick pop at vincent browne only for vincent browne to come back and bury him.

The fact that he is John Brutons brother has worked against him for some reason.

A lot of people think that the wrong Bruton brother got the job back then. Would be a huge improvement on Enda Kenny.

Ya - Enda kenny is poor alright.

Lacks convicrtion.

Did anyone see him that monday night before the lisbon treaty on Questions and Ansewrs?

On the yes side you have Micheal Martin and enda kenny.

On the no side you had Mary lou and that other guy from Libertas (whose name escapes me at the moment)

BasicallyKenny was of no assistance whatsoever to Martin.

People on teh panel clearly didn't respect kenny.
They would talk over him and ignore the points he made.

Kenny also seemed to lack any confidenece in himself going by how he expressed himself.

Yea, I remember the debate. The other guy was Declan Ganley.
Mary Lou and on the other side a woman in the Audience from the Women’s Alliance for Europe (or something like that) were far and away the best contributors. Martin was bad and Kenny was rubbish.

Didn't see it, but for me it's a sad day if Mary Lou's contributions are noteworthy - or maybe just the best of a bad lot?

I thought martin was good.

Kenny thought he was still in the classroom that night he was nearly putting his hand up asking could he speak! In fairness to Michael Martin he was a little outnumbered.
Agree with the comments about Richard Bruton. He would be a big improvement from Kenny.

Why don't FG and Labour combine forces and form one party? If we could put the Civil War politics behind us and have a party that combines the best political people and policies of the two, I think then we could have a credible opposition. I don't suppose it'll ever happen probably because diehards in both parties(the machinery)wouldn't tolerate it. Even with the present economic situation, unfortunately I think we will continue to see FF in government for the next ten years.

For one thing FG are a centre right party and Labour are a centre left party. For another Labour have been on the receiving end of a reverse take over by Democratic Left (Formerly the Workers Party) with their last two leaders, their party president and other front bench figures all from the smaller party. The same, I suspect, would happen to the new party that was formed as the labour party take over FG.

It's nothing to do with diehards or the civil war. FG are unreconstructed tories, and have more in common with Thatcher than Gilmore. Don't hold your breath waiting for that merger.

An FG FF merger would be more appropriate, but that'll NEVER happen. FG are centre-right and FF can be whatever you want them to be, so would be a better partner than Lab.

However, FG are more likely to merge with SF than ever merge with FF :D

Also agree that Richard Bruton should be FG leader - he's the best they've got.

From what I can remember Richard Bruton ran against Enda Kenny in the last leadership election and lost.
He was then appointed deputy leader.

Bruton comes across better than Enda Kenny but I can't see FG making a change before the next election.
