I must be a soft touch - a "friend I only see when he needs something" drove past the houses of a few of his mates over to my house to borrow my lawn mower. I know that borrowed tools work harder but I thought that it's a good solid machine and it can hadle a straight-forward front and back in any hands.

Well - it came back in a few pieces - "I don't know how but this just broke" the plastic was in my opinion very solid and the broken piece could be used to rob a bank or de-rail a train......

I am now considering joining the group who make excuses to avoid lending their tools etc.... 'The lawnmowers broken' even though the grass is cut brigade.. or it's away getting a service and will be a few weeks...

The guy I gave it to is a little down on lifes luck at the moment so I won't be sending him the bill... In the meantime my grass is growing and my good mower has to go to the mechanic - the last time I left in in for a repair I was waiting 2 months.....

I wouldn't mind but I just had an argument with my wife about lending the lawnmower - I retorted by calling her mean not to offer it and saying it would be looked after etc.......

Thats pretty annoying. Did he apologise and make any offer at paying for the fixing of it.

Sid, that's the last time I borrow anything from you. I was goin' to surprise you with a brand new mower but no more.

sidzer - Don't feel too bad, you learned your lesson. I once let a friend borrow my lawn mower and he had the cheek to come back an hour later and ask to borrow my petrol can.

Why do you think he drove past his mates house to yours? Because they wouldn't loan him anything as they know how he will treat it.

Ring him and tell him that that you left the machine in to be repaired and that its going to cost Exxx to get fixed and would he drop the money over to you immediately or he need never come near you again looking to borrow anything.

If you want to take the soft option you can blame your wife and tell him that she wants the money for the repair and that she had ordered you never to loan him anything ever again.

Whether he pays or not I would sooner put something in the trash rather than let him borrow anything again. I can't get over the brass neck of leaving something back broken and expecting you to pay for the repair.

The wife is handy to take the blame alright !!! Maybe if he had listened to her in the first place he would'nt have this problem now. It proves the point women are always right!!!!!!!

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry."

Ned Flanders - Good one.....

The guy did me a turn about 15years ago - I needed a van to move some stuff.....

Just to say that he was apologetic and did offer to pay - however we had just had a chat about how his ex was pressing him for every penny and he would not have money to feed himself if she got her way.

I just think that he didn't treat the mower with the same care that I would. As I said he is just getting back on his feet after a self-inflicted hard few years..

Thanks for all your posts..... New parts ordered - may get a horse while I wait...:D

I found a new lazy use for my electric lawnmower.

Previously, when I had to do the gradens, I used to cut the grass first. The mower would take up all the grass gas I cut. Then I cut the hedge with an rlectric shears. Then I would rake up the hedge and put in bags. I hated that part as there were usually thorny rosebushes and brambles mixed in with the normal hedgeing.

Now I cut the hedge and don't bother raking it up. I then cut the grass straight away. The lawnmower is quite powerful and it mulches the pieces of hedge and brambles into tiny bits and picks them up along with the grass. I put these in the compost/brown bin without having to pick thorns out of my hands for weeks after.

Sidser's friend probably tried the same trick but cut down trees first.
