I have been approached via telephone and email to purchase shares in a company. The company, an internet/technology company, looks to have a product in great demand. I agreed in principle to the purchase and was probably very foolish in giving them my postal address. I have been sent a form (via email) to sign and fax back to the company HQ (seems to check out) and also bank details of where the money has to be sent - Switzerland. I have asked several questions via email - the email address seems valid - but I have received no answers. Any time I have sent queries by email they have always been responded to by telephone. I am wary of purchasing. Any one else being approached in this manner? I am also concerned about possible identity theft as I have been requested to send proof of ID to comply with the Patriot Act.

Almost certainly this is a scam. Get out NOW. Terminate all dealing with this crowd. Don't send them any further information.

If it is a scam it is a very elaborate scam. I called head office in canada (this is a quoted company) and enquired after the gentlemen who has called and emailed me. I was informed that the investors department was closed for the day (it's only approx 2pm in the day) but I could have the gentleman's direct number. When given the number, I queried it as being a canadian number and was told that it was indeed but that the investor's department was actually in Germany and that I should call in the morning. The number is redirected from canada. There is doubt in my mind so I won't buy but I would very much like to get to the bottom of this.

Turn over all the information you currently have to the Garda Fraud Squad, printed emails, telephone numbers, names and addresses you have been given and let the professionals get to the bottom of it.

No thanks. I wouldn't waste my time even looking at them. This is almost certainly a scam. Get out or on your own head be it.

Don't mind getting to the bottom of it. These guys are scam artists and you will not get any satisfaction - you are wasting your time.

The only thing you have to do is stop all communication and DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY. Every cent you 'invest' in this is a cent you will never see again.

Received an email in response to my questions

Thank you for your email.

COMPANY NAME do not feel it necessary to issue a Terms and Conditions sheet where a shareholder is purchasing shares directly from the company as no financial intermediary is involved in the transaction. Your share certificate will be delivered to you within a reasonable time following your payment to COMPANY NAME.

The Patriot Act is indeed US legislation and has far reaching ramifications for many international companies. Our parent company is listed on a US exchange and we are therefore obliged to adhere to certain aspects. We are required by the act to maintain a record of proof of beneficial ownership of our company stock even though COMPANY NAME are a Canadian company.

Our shares will be listing on the London AIM so all share purchases and future pricing of listed shares will be in pounds sterling.

I hope this answers the questions you had. Should you require any further information please feel free to contact me. I kindly request that you provide me with a working telephone number where you may be reached.

Yours sincerely

Companies don't cold call random punters out of the blue to get them to invest in an IPO.
