Hi

I've a bunch of odd jobs that need doing around the house, and will be getting a handyman in to do them all over the course of a few hours. Estimate about 3-4 hours.

As I haven't a rashers what this should cost me, could anyone advise a ballpark hourly rate that might be reasonable so I know I'm not getting completely fleeced.

TIA

Probably depends on what the jobs are, what materials and tools would be required etc.

General DIY stuff e.g. put up some shelves, curtain rails, etc, all materials will be provided

Im just looking for a ballpark hourly estimate...

€ 25.00 - € 30.00 + would be alow estimate, better guys would be charging € 50.00 -€ 60.00/hr.

What!! 50.00 - 60.00 Euro per hour thats crazy... if anybody charges more than 20 - 35 Euro per hour they are over charging.

its very easy to put up curtain rails by the way

What is easy for some may not be easy for others.

Im not implying that this is the case here but for instance what if a person is living alone and has a disability or is elderly, then it may not be so easy.

Crazy prices quoted........then again suppose it depends what part of the country your in. My folks get a guy at home (waterford area) for €15/hour - he can turn his hand to anything from blocklaying to carpentry.

Get a quote! Have you anyone in mind yet? Then, depending on your circumstances (see earlier reply from Bosshog) consider getting a DIY book and doing the simpler jobs yourself if you can't afford the handyman.

I got a local guy to do odd jobs, curtain poles, bath nd bedroom mirrors...€80 a day. The poles were crooked, bath mirror cracked, screwed in too tight despite instructions, scratched other all new bath mirror nd dressing table mirror...the list goes on. He was highly recommended?!!! See work done in someone elses house before hiring/paying.

We had a number of guys like that some years back in my home town. The day before they go to a house they are in the pub, the day after it they are in the pub. I am not saying that this is the case for all, but it was certainly the case in the town I grew up in. They had no regard for them selfs let alone anothers property. They certainly had not go insurance and the like.... cash was the rule as the dole was there main source of income.

Most of the lads I know who work for themselves have the same problem when someone wants you to do a quick job say 3 hours what are you supposed to do when your finished, pointless going to another job at lunch time, the day is almost finished. So you have to charge for a full day to make it worth your while. Most chippies I know charge 300 per day so a handyman should charge about 200 for the 3 hours best to find him other work to do while he's there.

Hi,
I had a man yesterday to do some jobs :
1. glue and tighten screws on 3 stools
2. Replace 3 door locks
3. plane a door

Cost 120 euro cash, I thought it was expensive

Hi,
From 150 to 300 a day for most tradesmen, and S.L.F is right, get the whole day from them sure there registered and get refs from them, and ring the numbers that they give you and if they are near call out and see the people just to make sure there not getting friends to take the call on there behalf, the average hourly rate is 35 to 55 per hour, and that's not bad for guaranteed tradesmen.

Kindest Regards

Dr Kevin

The stool job is negligible - assuming they are fairly standard.

But the planing and doorlock replacing can be fiddly enough.
If locks etc were supplied €120 maybe isn't too bad.

Come again ???? Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't working up to lunchtime be considered as "Half a day" ?

Glad I don't know any of your mates!! You're basically saying that they'll be charged a higher hourly rate if the job takes only 1-2 hours.

That's taking the proverbial !
