New model Mondeo or not?

I have a 03 2.0l TDCI Zetec Mondeo and am thinking of trading up to a new model. A 07 1.8 TDCI Zetec costs about 30k at present (on carzone.ie) and according to a few garages I contacted I will get between 6 and 8k for my own, so looking at 22 - 24 for upgrade.

However, having talked to a few people about how' big' the new Mondeo is (its apparently a good bit bigger than old model) i'm starting to have second thoughts about whether its the right car to go for. I don't have kids or anything so don't need the space - I just like the size of the old mondeo, esp when going for weekends away etc. So, my alternative would be something like a Focus - maybe the 1.6 TDCI Zetec - I could pick up a 07 for under 24k (except I might have to wait a while as they are scarce on the ground) or even a new one would be less than the 07 Mondeo (I could get lower spec Mondeo but I really think the Zetec is the one to hold its value - but maybe I am wrong).

So opinions wanted on value of these two options - which will have better resale in 3 or 4 years? Is the Focus as good a car to drive as the Mondeo (accepting its a different class, smaller etc)??

Interesting one this. If you don't need a Mondeo sized car, why by one? The 07's are an old model now too.

Focus is an excellent car. Smaller, lighter, more nimble. It'll be cheaper to run too. Don't discount the C-Max either. They are excellent. 1.6 TDCI is very good. Zetec trim is preferrable. A/c etc. You won't get the same big car feel however. That'd be impossible.

The new Focus MkIII is due in March, but it's less of a quantum change than the new Mondeo.

All things considered I'd advise you go with a Focus.

Thanks RS2K,

I'm starting to thnk the same thing myself! Its the new model Mondeo im looking at..there are a few 07 demo's knocking around in garages, and I really love the look of the car but have to balance that against the size and running costs of it. Good to see a recommendation for the Focus, didn't know as much about how they drive etc.

I currently drive a 2006 4 door Focus 1.6l Ghia and I can highly recommend it. The engine with this car (115bhp) has more power than than base 1.6l (100bph) so it's not underpowered at all. The car itself is very comfortable and drives very well. Before this I had a 3 door 2002 1.6l Focus zetec which was an excellent car to drive.

Just to clarify, I have no connection with Ford other than being regarded as a satisfied customer.

100bhp 1.6 is still a good engine though. The TI-VCT is being dropped apparently for the MkIII Focus.

If it's the new model Mondeo O.P. that changes things a bit. I suggest you test drive both it and the Focus.

I have a Focus Titanium 1.6 Ti-Vct (115 BHP) at present and it's a great car to drive. Very smooth and responsive when you need it.
It's defo smaller than the Mondeo but has plenty of room (if you need it)

I'm trading up to an ST very soon so keep an eye out on the car sales sites for it ;)

Mik

Just saw something that's putting me off doing anything and waiting for a few months - Ford are claiming that the new Focus (due March) with 1.6 TDCi engine will achieve 119 CO2 emissions, regardless of spec - see article. If this is correct, it would put it in the A class of post July tax and VRT arrangements - meaning 100 euro annual tax and a lowly 14% VRT - compared to 428 tax after February and 25% VRT!!

Correct and right. The cleaner diesels will fall in price post June ok.

Viewed the new Mondeo at my local dealer the otherday and was highly impressed. It's a beautiful car inside and out, miles ahead of the old model. Likely order a 1.8 diesel Zetec for Jan 09, very impressive car.

HAd adrive in a late 07 1.8TDCi Zetec over the weekend - very impressed! Its advertised for 30k but the garage will only give me peanuts for my own, but if i pay cash he is offering 1,500 off the price. I think I could sell my own for about 2k more than garage are offering, even if it might take a little time. Seems to be a good deal for cash, and I might even try get them to drop the price by another 500!!

Was in ford Blanch on Sunday..1.8 lx tdci 2008 for 28k.

That link to the Focus looks cool. Which is the one being released, the sexy looking one or the one that looks like the current model?

If the new Focus is bigger, you will have less depreciation, less tax, less maintenance and less outlay..I'm leaning towards a Focus

yes the Lx is a bit cheaper but the Zetec does have a good few extras - fog lamps, alloys, climate control and A/C, and cruise control to name but a few.

I'm tempted to wait for Focus but after driving the new Mondeo not sure i want to drop down a notch in size and comfort stakes, plus my own current car will depreciate more and i will have to fork out money between now and then in tax, service etc.

i was looking at the mondeo also , but you lose ur This post will be deleted if not edited to remove bad language on ford on re-sale , well thats my opinion anyway , u have a 03 mondeo yeah ?? and only getting 6-8k ??? i have a 04 golf €23800 new with the extras and im getting €14650 for trade in , not bad for a 4 year old car

ford are notorious for not giving good re-sale values , regardless how nice the sales man says it is etc just think of the re-sale and if u'll get something respectable

Note : i was offered €10750 for my golf by ford , thats a rip off

try the new passat if u like a big car , holds its value way better

But when you are buying second hand this doesn't really hold true. A similar spec Passat to the above emntioned Mondeo is in the 33k range and according to reports the Mondeo is a far superior car. So the fact that the Passat might be worth a few thousand more in a few years is negated by the fact that i would have to pay a few more thousand now to buy one.

personally id go for german , always great cars , bmw , merc , vw , audi etc and they last forever

ok u pay €2000-€3500 more now which if u borrowing wont be that much extra , and i garauntee when u sell a passat or ford ( both similar price start ) ud lose lets say an example over 4 years ud lose €15k on mondeo or more and the passat maybe €9-10k because the passat is a far superior car in my opinion , i mean come on ford ? what have the americans ever done right :)

Haha, not much admittedly, but then again its a Belgian car now apparently!!

Anyway, point taken on resale, Ford does seem to lose in that area, which is a pity because I would argue that the Mondeo is a better car in every other way than the Passat - and don't just take my word for - [broken link removed] from Honestjohn.co.uk. I especially like the bit about the Mondeo leaving the Passat eating dust ;)

the mondeo is nice looking dont get me wrong , i just think vw is better quality , plus the passat looks nicer too , if you dont mind losing you bollox on it ( excuse the language ) then by all means get mondeo but in 4 or 5 years could wish u got passat as ud get more for it

best of luck with whatever u chose

let us know

I owned a Passat and currently drive a Audi so I like German cars but the Mondeo is a far superior car to the Passat; better designed, better built and better to drive. For the money VW are about the most boring cars you can drive. I also find them to be less reliable than Fords.
Mercs are in a class of their own for being unreliable. They also devalue like mad, a guy I know just traded in his 2 year old S-Class. He lost €400 a week since he bought it. Now that's depreciation :D

The Mondeo are usually loaded with kit as standard where as the Passat's are generally lower spec, as everything is an optional extra. Mondeo is a far superior drivers car. I agree the Passat will hold its value marginally better, but having to drive the thing for a couple of years as opposed to the Ford is too high a price to pay in my book. Servicing costs should be much cheeper on the Ford also.
