New model Mondeo or not?

Have checked out a few garages for my preferred 1.8 TDCi Zetec.

As per earlier post, garage 1 is offering me the 2007 with 10000 miles for 28,500 euro. Its a saloon though and I would prefer a hatcback. So that 4k off the retail price of a new one for a 1 year old car.

Garage 2 currently have the same model, but a H/B which is a 08 demo but won't be able to sell until April. They will take a deposit form and hold it until then for 30k (which is 3k off new price). They will offer finance on this for €600 pm (over 5 years) which is marginally cheaper than the AIB loan I was quoted.

Garage 2 will also sell me a brand new one for €630 pm finance. I didn't want a brand new one but with Finance this is only working out €1,800 more expensive over 5 years, which seems to be a good deal, considering the loan I had planned to get with AIB for 30k is only 28 per month cheaper!).

What do people think of these options? I can stretch to 630 per month - thats not a problem, but just wondering what people's views are on the actual value of each option?

I think you should drive an Avensis, Passat or the new Mazda 6. Mondeo is a beautiful car but you'll get nothing for it in three/four years, Ford can't hold up with VW and Toyota in terms of resale.

As for your options, I'd go for Garage 2 selling you a brand new car @ 630pm.

There will be surprisingly little in the difference in resale values between the brands. VW's supposed edge is a myth, as is there reliability. Toyota's are tinny and relatively poor to drive.

All cars depreciate. This class and size particularly.

rs2k u havnt a clue mate

how much do u think a ford focus retail €24000 would sell for after 4 years ?? 2 of my friends sold 2 within 4 months of each other , one got €9750 and other €10150

now i sold my golf €23800 new 2004 sold it 2 weeks ago for €15350

so ur trying to say that vw dont hold value ???

built like tanks aswell , if i was unfortunate to have a crash , id rather vw or audi than a ford to be honest

im guessing by the name ur an rs cosworth fan ?? or im wrong

fast car but a bucket of ****

Toyota and VW built solid cars, both brands are well known for quality and have good resale value.

I'm not knocking Ford, I love the new Mondeo but something like a Passat or Avensis is gonna be worth more when it's time to trade up.

Not interested in arguing about values. I stand by my earlier point.

You have been suckered by branding. Audi are the worst of the three for safety with VW and Ford about the same.
I do agree that VW hold their value better but I am sceptical about the margin that you imply. That still doesn't make them better cars. Ford is better built and better to drive than VW and in my experience they are more reliable.

I just read UpThe banner's link. Think that puts the safety issue to bed

The issue of 'holding their value' often applies more specifically to individual models rather than marques as a whole. Fair enough, the Golf is well known for slow depreciation but other VWs less so. Similarily the Civic holds it's value very well - admittedly Honda in general are good in this respect - but the Accord or even Jazz will lose value more quickly than the Civic. The Corolla tends to keep it's relative value better than the Avensis...etc etc

Add to that, as RS2K says, the fact that larger cars tend to depreciate more quickly than e.g. smaller hatches anyway and the whole concept of any one particular marque holding their value better than another begins to look very murky.

civic is generally known as a boy racer car and is classified high performance so more attractive to modifiers , still a nice car anyway , not knocking them.

Ford are ok i never said they were bad , just said that vw or audi hold up better value

i had 2 fiats , 1 ford , on my second vw

and wouldnt change for anything , great car to drive and look class
