Getting dog used to cat

My parents recently adopted a dog from a pound and its a gorgeous little 4 yr old cairn terrier. The problem is that it goes for their cat very badly and really tries to attack it! Otherwise it is extremely placid.

Has anyone had this problem before, or would they have any advice on possible ways to get them to peacefully coexist?!

Check out some of the results from a google search I just did - seems to be a load of useful information. Good luck, and remember, cats are superior beings (your parents no doubt know this already!) - once the dog accepts that, everything will be fine :D

yeah the auld comedy cartoon foodchain is in effect in my parents house. I have a cat and dog myself at home and they are good mates. I just don't know if this dog has ever had to deal with cats before.

So true haha!

Seriously though..you may be in for a hard slog here with this one! The dog is now 4..a terrier, which are known cat haters! The cat has probably no doubt learned to stay well clear of dogs of any kind so i cant imagine the interaction between the two to be pleasant! I had a cat and a dog..for 10 years but they hated the sight of each other! When the cat was in the dog was out and vice versa..made for a more peaceful life :D they never got used to each other no matter what we did!

Let them fight it out, they'll establish their own order.
If the cat tries to run just glue its paws to a sheet to wood.

Seein as we're talkin about cats..this cartoon sums them up..hilarious

This is a cheerful, alert, lively and extrovert breed and makes ideal friends for children as they can tolerate rough play and have great senses of humour. They will also get on with other dogs, although some will stand their ground. They must, however, be taught at an early age to accept cats and other household pets as they will give chase once older.

From my own experience the dog and cat will eventually learn to ignore each other - it's no harm for the cat to give the dog a good scrape - it'll soon get the message. Our cats still take a good swipe at the dogs if they get too annoying!:D

I'm sure if you give the dog some fine wine to go along with cat he'll soon get used to it :D

I would agree that they will eventually get used to each other. 6 years ago I adopted a Yorkshire Terrier from a pound. I had a cat at the time (She has died of old age) - it did take some time for them to get used to each other but they did.

Its probably has been done already but make sure dog has got all its jabs & immunity. After bringing my dog from the P (dont like the word!) he was very sick we nearly lost him he hadnt been vacinated & had parvo, 2wks of no sleep trying to keep him alive but we suceeded in the end.
Best of luck!
J

thanks for all the suggestion!! I'l give them a go and see if any can result in peaceful co-existence!
