Identity theft Advice

Anyone any advice on unauthorised transactions? It's happened to me with both my Visa and Laser card for over €1,300.00 (STG 600 and EUR 528) with what looks like web transactions. I have possession of both cards (bank notified that these were not transacted by me by fax) and cards have been cancelled.

Quite shocked and it's come at a bad time of the year but any advice much appreciated.

Thanks
P

Have you done any banking on computers other than your own? Etc.

I don't bank online and I'd only transact online using my Visa on amazon, motortax.ie and cdwow.ie I'd be fairly wary too at ATM's, but obviously I was got good!

...with what looks like web transactions. ...

I think you'd need to confirm this before question were and when.

I had a card cancelled and the band wouldn't tell me why it had been cancelled or how it had been flagged. They just reissued it. I made the point to them, how can I avoid this in the future if they don't tell me what has happened?

Did you report this to the Gardai?

Not yet. Part of reason I posted this.

I reported the Visa card unauthorised transactions verbally on the 24th December and then sent a fax stating same. I got a fax confirm but it was 1pm Christmas Eve and after following up today AIB claimed they never received the fax. In any case I resent it today and called them back to confirm that they've received it. The Visa card was cancelled same day as I reported it. Supposedly they're chargeback department will start the investigation.

This morning I was checking my current account balance and discovered it was at least €1000 less than what it should be. Scanning recent transactions on phone banking I've so far discovered a POS transaction for €599 and another non-POS transaction for €528 which is for fmmobiles.ie. I contacted the branch and they're currently investigating and will come back with exact time/place etc and I'll have to claim back.

A real pain.

Was thinking that too - at a restaurant during the Christamas break maybe?

I tend to frequent the same restaurants so that's kind of worrying me wrt future card use.

But for now I'm more worried about the time this will take to resolve this mess.

Thats the most likely IMO. Though they wouldn't get your PIN from that would they.

POS sale was actually at JCBrowne which is part of buyandsell.ie so they have all been web transactions... thus far. Don't need a PIN to transact on the web.

I've been asking around and didn't realise quite how prevalant a scam this is. I'm been told that it can take 10 days to 4 weeks to resolve and receive a refund.

How likely is it that someone managed to skim both your cards seperately at the one time? Is it not more likely that someone got the nos. of your cards from your handbag/wallet and put the cards back?? You'll find out soon enough as the goods will have been delivered somewhere......

I'd thought of that but the credit card amounts (all Sterling amounts) appeared during November and I only noticed them when I browsed the statement. The Laser card transactions commenced 21st December and hit my current account between 24th and 28th December. I doubt that they'd sit on my laser card details for over a month before doing damage.

I'm guessing swiped cards numbers get passed on and on if they get on the web and I'm guessing that people keep trying their luck with these numbers for a long time.

This is really interesting.

There was an online transaction on my credit card on Christmas Day at 11am for €22.16. The entry said 'PayPal - coffeebuttons'.

I definitely was not buying anything online on that day and rang AIB who advised cancelling the card immediately (I noticed it on 2nd Jan 08 when checking statement online)

I do have a PayPal account that I have not used since this time last year, it has only €1.50 in it and there's no activity recorded recently. I've emailed them, hung on for ages listening to music on their customer care line, all to no avail.

I'm lucky it was for so little, but who got my credit card details and from where (PayPal?).

Any update on your case, PIgoe?

Bear in mind that you don't need money "in" your PayPal account as in some or all cases it is linked to your card(s) and uses this(these) to pay for things when necessary.

It's so important to keep a close eye on your bank statements and let the bank know asap re any suspect transactions so that they can stop the card. A friend of mine was defrauded of hundreds but she told the bank as soon as she noticed and she was refunded within a week or so. I think the general rule of thumb is that if fraud HAS actually taken place and you haven't been careless with your card info, the banks will provide a refund. They have v highly specialised staff and technical systems in place to detect fraud. Often they that spot unusual transactions before the cardholder does!

Also, Visa and Mastercard will be bringing in a new system soon called 3D Secure. Eventually you will need a password (which you agree in advance with the bank that issued the card) in order to transact online - providing a much stronger defence against the bad guys!
