I am thinking of buying a car early next year. Budget of about 55K. I have no great love or knowledge of cars but I need a prestige type car for my work - improve my image. Should I buy new or secondhand? Should I go to the North or UK? What make-model? What can I get for the budget allowed?

Really? What's wrong with it as things stand and what sort of image must you portray? That might help people to make more specific suggestions.
Middle aged professional with a wealthier clientelle currently driving a heap of scrap. I dont mind but I know my clients look at me funnily.

Much more detail needed anyway Simplyjoe - coupé? saloon? power?economy? expected mileage? anything you specifically don't want?

As it is, your question is very difficult to answer.

Understood. What is a coupe? I have a wife and 2 kids. Don't do a lot of milage so economy not really a major issue. Power - so so. Slightly green (politically) . Interested in golf and soccer. I travel abroad a lot. Dont want a jeep. Done that. Current image is very low key and I need to impress to attract a better, wealthier clientelle.

Seeing as you have the money, why not get a Prestige Hybrid car, such as a [broken link removed]? Customers would be impressed both by the brand and the green credentials.

Sounds like a good idea based on the OP's politics. Also, the Lexus I think, is less brash/ostentatious than some luxury cars.

But maybe a degree of "brashness" is wanted? ;)

A good diesel 220 beats a big lexus hybrid on green credentials by a long shot.

What about the new Mercedes C-Class? You'd get a nice one with plenty of extras for your budget. One hting to be aware of is not to be too flash...that can have the opposite effect with clients and customers. They may think you're doing too well!

If you can hold off until July, a 3.0TDI Audi A6 would be a perfectly stylish, somfortable, understated family saloon with great power and green credentials. If not, buy a petrol one in January and you should save in terms of being on the old motor tax system. A 2.0 TDI is also a great car, but remains expensive until July and is a little underpowered for this class of car. An E class merc is an excellent car and is sold in a number of styles based on how discreet the owner wishes to be.

Beemers and Mercs are just not understated though and neither is an IS220. It is also aimed at somebody who is looking for more of a drivers car. It would be cramped compared to the large German saloons.

The new C-Class is well worth considering, BMW 3 series or Honda Accord (might not be totally upper class but the diesel is great and the car looks well)

Yeah either one of them absolutely timeless.

You could use the rest of the budget for tax insurance and petrol.
