An extract from a letter in today's Indo...

Last weekend, when challenged about the lack of progress in developing the Metro link to Dublin Airport, the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, told Sean O'Rourke on 'The Week in Politics', "I never promised that the Metro would be running by 2007".
He went on to explain that he had merely promised to "examine the possibilities of putting a Metro there."
However, the Programme for Government, which Mr Ahern signed up to in 2002, is quite clear on the matter.
In it, the Government says: "We will develop the Metro for Dublin on a PPP basis making the maximum use of private finance and achieving a link to Dublin Airport by 2007".

My own (conspiracy) theory on this is that the DAA are making far too much money on the long term carpark to allow a Metro to be built.....

Any thoughts?

I think it's just down to weak and incompetent government

Agreed. Under Transport 21 weren't the two Luas lines supposed to be connected by 2008. Thats not going to happen and yet they expect us to believe that they can deliver the rest of Transport 21!

Does the 21 in transport 21 stand for 2021 or 2100?

Nope for the 21 overprized consultants on the project that got rich by making useless suggestions.

Sunny, there is still time, i'ts only 2007 and if saw the posters correctly, there is surveying going on for the LUAS BX line. Maybe if we leave the work to professional we get it in time .. ups.. what am I dreaming off...

Isn't it obvious? Bertie meant that the first Airport Luas will arrive at the airport by 7 minutes past 8pm........:D ...with a free "After Eight" for everyone on the tram!!

Even being ironic, you are giving the DAA far too much credit for having a brain between them. We are talking about the worst run airport in Europe here -- completely lacking in any kind of strategic or management thinking. I'm not even sure they would know what a metro was, or even how it might affect them.

A recent freeing up of space when they removed the old toilets and bank in departures (beside area A) could have given them room for additional security screening, with a secure corridor to airside. No such use of brains by the DAA "management" -- they turned the additioonal space into a queueing area for the existing security screening area! You think these guys would know how to plan something?

Maybe we need a separate thread for idiot decisions out at the airport -- or has this server got that much storage?

Ah guys, give Bertie a break. With all the things he's had to deal with, you can't reasonably expect him to get through all of those commitments. They have done fantastic work in so many areas. There is no doubt that they are seriously committed to improving the lot of the average family.

I'm all for that... As a frequent user of the Dublin Airport I can contribute a lot ;-)

But than again, progress is there... The new Security Fasttrack for Business Class Customers.. The 2 additional security lanes on the right side (well I could have managed 4 in there)..

And I agree, the DAA has not enough brain to stop the Metro.. It's just their natural incompetence that stops everything.

I think you forgot the  at the end of your post ;)

I think they HAVE brains in the DAA, but are using them for their own gain. They are making a huge wedge from the longterm car-parking. Anyone remember the Prime Time programme last year about them opposing all planning permissions in the area so that they could scoop up land cheaper? These guys couldn't care less about the public. Recently had to park for a week and it cost about 60 euro....insane for a 8"x4" box out in the middle of nowhere....

Firefly.

If you don't want to spend up to an hour getting back to your car then it's €30 a day.

I give my parking business to Bewleys or Quickpark -- would abandon my car on the side of the road rather than leave it in a DAA carpark!

I didn't pay much attention this time to Berties promises for the next 5 years of government, so what are his latest transport/travel promises?
Will we have a bullet train to Cork, a rail connection between our two major airports Shannon and Dublin, or maybe a motorway to Donegal to ferry all the new guards ?
Come on he must have some hints ?
Maybe a new toll bridge over the Liffey at the Sally Gap ??
Have they started the new terminal at the airport yet?

An application for the metro was lodged with An bord Pleanala for the metro
