I find it amazing how often they strike. The facts are that taxi drivers earn a very good living and its widely known that the majority of them do not declare all of their income and therefore pay less tax than they should.

They are just comming across as being pure greedy. Any chances of Ryanair starting a low fares taxi service?

Why does it cost €24 to go 8 miles in Dublin in a banged out 8 year old car!

And of course the taxis in Galway aren't striking during race week, no they of course wouldnt miss a big earning opportunity. Was talking to a taxi man on saturday and he expects to earn 2.5k in race week. How much will he declare I wonder? He said as little as possible and I believe him.

Will they stay on strike for the next 24hours and miss out on tonights earnings, its childrens allowance day, and the day everyone gets 1st part of that 1k per child thing.

According to Newstalk this morning, for every one driver picketing Dublin Airport this morning, four were driving through the pickets with passengers on board.

A bit late with this, I know but the funniest comment I heard was on the radio, that taxi drivers in Galway did not take part in the stoppage so that they would "facilitate the Galway Races" :p

Meaning of course, they weren't going to lose out on what must be one of the most lucrative days for taxi-drivers in the year !!

Yeah, how nice of them. They were doing us all a favour, we owe them one.

I have noticed that the traffic around Dublin flows much better on the days the Taxis go striking.

More taxi strikes ?

Yes please !

I have a feeling that they may just work during the Ryder Cup when it comes to it!! All those tourists with big bags arriving in Dublin Airport for them to rip off with the luggage charge. I am sure they will call off the strike for the "good of the country" and then strike straight after it....

Yes, just like they pay ALL the tax they should for the good of the country.

If they still have to pay Dublin airport authority for picking up at the airport why should they not be allowed to charge a pick up fee?

It's not the airport pick up fee I have a problem with. (well actually I do) Its the fee that they charge for each piece of luggage on top of that. The DAA currently charges taxis 70c for each pick up. Taxis charge the customers 1.50 plus lugguage charges. Doesn't take a genius to work out how profitable this is to the taxi drivers.

I think the taxi drivers are right to strike during the Ryder cup ... more people should boycott golf ... it's a good walk ruined!

Father in law is a cabbie. Conversation went like this whats the story with the ryder cup, you going on strike? "more chance of me playin in the ryder cup then going on strike" but what about pickets from the other cabbies? "f**k them, my insurance is due"

I thought I heard a radio piece mentioned that Revenue had agreed a 'standard' tax payment required from all taxi drivers and this was accepted as full obligations of their tax liabilities. This seems strange and possibly anti-competitive to me. Could this be true?

For a long time taxi men paid around 1000.00K a year in tax, now with meter's been tagged it might change a little, It is their right to strike if they feel hard done by, what other way can they keep their rights if the man in charge insists that's it no more to be said about it.

I know of a few taxi men and they earn about 60k a year. They pay less than €1,000 a year on tax.

For some reason the business of receipts for repairs/servicing etc doesn't seem to be too important. They can put in a number of services(without receipts) and get away with it. This of course means that they can put in inflated figures for maintanence costs and use back street garages(cheaper) who themselves in turn don't pay tax.

It's a great country we live in!

Think you're ALL being mean to taxis/hackneys. My hubby was a hackney for about 5 years and YES the money was brilliant but, the expenditure was very high. Brakes pads every 6 weeks, new tyres every 4-5 months, base fee, fuel, insurance (was about £3500 at the time), no sick pay.... car accident and you can't work either, if some little upstart gets ill in the car, then you're off the road for the night, the list goes on and on.

The majority of the lads he worked with paid tax - they just had very good accountants, who managed to claim for everything going!!

ACA ... please..... how come if it's that bad the number of plates rose from just over 2000 to 12,000 in a couple of years? I know of someone who was charged €60 from Dublin Airport to Ratoath (what's that about 12 - 15 miles?). Crazy money.......

Sounds like Revenue are being negligent on these guys....problem is that most PAYE folk can't afford a "good accountant" :)
