Mind blowing, a TD is not required for over a year so why not drop the post, if they can manage for a year without they can go without. And then we are told how hard working all these TD's are!!

A joke.

Noah, I agree. And with some of our TDs trapped abroad at present. At least, they cannot damage the economy more while they are away.

Sure if none of them are required during their extensive summer holiday break from the Dail, does this not prove that none of them are needed?

This is quite an interesting thread.

What do we need them for? - Seriously?
All they seem to do is damage the country and its prospects. They're dismantling the country's infrastructure.

What would happen if we just imposed a standard tax rate, and just left things as they are, without TD intervention. We'd also save a fortune not having to pay for pampered TDs.

One other thing. Are these TDs so incompetent that they are 'stuck' abroad? They have departments that arrange their travel for them, yet they seem unable to return? These people are supposedly running the country?

I'm guessing some of them probably like being 'stranded'.

They probably think they might get some sympathy from the public.

For one period during the 80's we had no goverment for a few months and the ecomony inproved for the first time in years.

I don't think this would work. As part of the EU, tax credits, tax incentives etc. are some of the only tools available to stimulate certain sectors or geographical areas and generally direct our country.

Just because the current group of politicians completely messed up by over-stimulating the wrong sectors, it does not mean that a flat rate of tax would work better.

I wonder will they claim all the extra costs incurred at being 'stranded' on their expenses?

I find this quite amusing. The FG tourism spokesperson, Olivia Mitchell, is in Spain during the best two weeks of the year. Great way to sell Irish tourism.

They give us the illusion that the people, through democracy, are running the country - so we don't notice that the permanent government (civil service) is really running the country ;)

So just to clarify, no new legislation, no changes in our existing policy, no changes in policy to respond to external changes - right? Who do expect to make the major decisions like - do we proceed with Metro or not? do we prioritise spending on mental health or cardiac care?

That is true, and that's why we need politicians who are experts in their field.

If you don't use it lose it.

People obviously haven't noticed that they have reduced representation so lets save ourselves a TD's salary.
