Both of us will be 50 this year and would like to celebrate with a very special holiday. Any suggestions, about 3 weeks in duration.

I second the cruise idea. If you are starting from the west coast of the US to go to Alaska, stop off for a short break in Vegas on the way !! Other cruise-types could be the stop/start type with island hopping, etc. in either the Med or Caribbean. If you're not into stop/start, an alternative cruise could be a direct "crossing" from Southampton to NYC, or vice versa - these take about 6 days. Prices are good these days, I believe. http://www.cruisecritic.com/ is a good resource site to start from.

We are thinking cruise ourselves. I suffer from motion sickness, but am told that if we go on one of the very large cruise ships, I will not notice anything.
For this reason, we think maybe Miami. Drive down to the Florida Keys and sightsee, then a 3/5night cruise in Caribbean.
Anyone any suggestion to make this a very memorable holiday. Thinking of booking flights early (maybe when Aerlingus has Autumn Sale!!!), then wait and see if there are any late bargains that coincide with our dates.
There were lots available last year, late Sept early Oct.

If you're going to that part of the world in the autumn, watch out for the hurricane season.

Personnaly speaking, I echo the Alaska cruise, absolutely stunning, don't worry about motion sickness on the big ships, I remember waking up one morning to find we'd docked at a port and hadn't even noticed it. However do try and get a cabin with a balcony, you won't feel as hemmed in and you can enjoy the views in peace and quiet

The Rocky mountineer is a great trip as well. For our honeymoon 5 years ago, we flew to Calgary, drove up to Banff for a few nights(stunning scenary), then got the train down to Vancouver, went on the Alaskan cruise and then back to Vancouver for a few nights. Frankly, you can't go wrong with Canada

Go to Botswana and see the Okavango Delta, a huge river that empties into the desert. It's number one on my list of places I want to visit.
Then fly to South Africa and spend a week or two; drive the Garden Route, see table Mountain, visit Robin Island or visit some of the best Game Parks in Africa.

I've been all over America and while it's great it's nothing special, not in comparison to Africa.

Would love to do 'round the world' and we will both be retired by July, but have little problem of one chick left in the nest... 17 year old. So maybe in a few years.... maybe. Where can I get info on Alaska cruise, and what is the best time of the year for that.

Just another suggestion...I travelled to Africa last year and did a package of safari, kilimanjaro and zanzibar...there was adventure, camping, luxury (the zanzibar resort was out of this world) up close and personal with the animals, cultural, relaxation, achievement...really really highly recommended...the trip was 17 days, like three holidays in 1 nd abslutely jampacked...I think it would be an extremenly pleasant wy to mark the 50th!

Go on a Carribbean cruise! You'll see St Lucia, San Juan, Puerto Rico, St Martin, St Thomas and Barbados etc!! You can go swimming with sea turtles(their huge!), a really amazing creature, but be careful of baracudas (their scary!) You get to visit 6 (i think!) islands. You can also go on a pirate ship! There are too many things to list!

And theres laods of things to keep you occupied on the ship, you wont want to get off! . examples: Rock climing (yes there is a rock climing wall on the ship!), theather, pool bars, golf, tennis, ab-sailing(yes really!) ,casinos, swimming pools, spas, beauticians, pubs, shops, hairdressers, jewelers, ice-skating rink (yes its true!)cinema, fast food places, discos, nightclubs, live music, clothes shops as well as 5* restaurants to name a few!.

One of the most amazing features i have ever seen can be found in the centre of the ship.."The Main Street", a cobbled street complete with cafes and bistros (yes, inside the ship!!!) Its amazing. You can sit outside one of the cafes and its like your in the middle of a city or something! Another highlight is eating a meal in one of the out door decks and watching the flying fish, they literally leap out of the water beside the ship and can "fly" over 100metres! Its ironic when youre watching them and are in awe and then your waiter serves you.... flying fish!

The three-tier diningroom is magnificant, there is this huge grand staircase that the waiters come down while singing! Be prepared to eat 10 desserts and they dont skimp on portion sizes!! The food is 5*. You are assigned a server for you full stay, no one else will serve you. If you are a wine drinker and dont finish the bottle then it is re-sealed and will be waiting for you at your next meal! We secretly marked the level of our wine bottle and when we got it back the next night not one drop was missing.. now that honesty! Tipping the staff is a big thing on board, you dont have to give much but you have to remember that most of the staff are extremely poor so any tips are greatly recieved. They go above and beyond their duties.

I know you said you suffer from motion sickness but trust me the ship is SOO big you wont feel anything. I suffer terribly from motion sickness but i didnt feel ill once. You cant even imagine the sheer size of the ship until you see it and even then its hard to comprehend! They call it a floating hotel for a reason, it feels like your on land.
All excursions are included in the price of you ticket as well as meals and drinks in the dining hall. As far as i can remember all food and drink is included in the price whether you have 5* meal or a burger, champagne or rum!

You arrival and departure is from San Juan so you could always spend a week there to begin with.
Im telling you now that if you want to be treated like royalty then this is the way to go! Very friendly staff and an exceptional ship. You will also find some of the nicest people in the world on this ship! This is definetly the holiday of a life-time!!
If i were you i would definetely look up Royal Caribbean.
To sum it all up i suggest
wk1 Florida
WK2 Cruise
WK3 Miami!!!!
Hope this helped you a bit, but no matter what you decide i hope you have a very special 50th!
WHEW im finished!

If going on a cruise, i'd recommend Royal Carribbean. From what I hear, some of the others are a bit "lanzrottee".
