Willie O'Dea Defence??????

of what? We would need to actually have an army for him to screw up the army.

I've always liked the detail that the highest ranking officer in our defence forces is a Lieutenant General because they're not big enough to justify a full General. In the same way I believe the British Army is no longer big enough to justify having any Field Marshals.

"Definition of Corps: A tactical unit of ground combat forces between a division and an army commanded by a lieutenant general and composed of two or more divisions and auxiliary service troops."

Are the Irish defence forces even big enough to justify a Lieutenant General?

Mary Harney in Health - now that's scary. Let's see her bump up the already high prices by privatising everything that moves, ensuring that we pay a nice margin to shareholders on top of everything else.

You are blinded by your ideology rainyday. She is a woman of considerable ability, she asked for the job and she said yesterday that she wanted equal access for all to health services.
Don't forget that the national treatment purchase fund was a PD initiative which basically bought private services for public patients, giving them access to services that the better off had to buy.
She's almost a socialist!
My concern is that she had set the bar too high for herself.

Cabinet

Hello,

1. I actually felt sorry for Willie O'Dea as everyone in the Dail seemed to laugh as his name was announced for Defence.

2. I think Mary Harney MAY be o.k. as she PICKED to take on Health which is a very tough job ........ she obviously likes a challenge.

3. The two decisions that I cannot understand are:
Why were Martin Cullen and Noel Dempsey not sacked ??
In particular Martin Cullen ............. Transport is already in chaos !!!

Regards,

K.

Re: Reshuffle

Yeh!....Its amazing how almost all of them kept "their" jobs.
Competence doesn`t seem to come into it.
How does someone responsible for the Health fiasco for over 5 years not be a regular in Werburgh St dole office.
Poor Seamus Brennan was a trier, ready to take on vested interests. What chance did he have with Bertie "backing" him.
Mary in Health may work. There`s a new hotshot CEO, named Halligan, coming soon and if he`s as good as his record in the NHS, with Mary harney backing him it could work wonders.

list the new ministers with a short biog

Can anyone point to a link which lists the new ministers with a short biog and the roles and responsibilities associated with the job?

Thanks,
ajapale

Re: list the new ministers with a short biog

So where has Mary H demonstrated her 'considerable ability'? She has never had a job outside of politics. She was fortunate to be running Enterprise through the Celtic Tiger boom - right place, right time - rather than any innate personal ability. The PD's as a party have stagnated under her leadership and failed to capitalise on the considerable growth in right-wing thinking in Ireland. Her stewardship of the Community Employment scheme shows little real concern for the worst-off in society. She has no track record for taking on vested interests, like the consultants.

I'm scared - very scared....

You could try navigating from here...

Re: list the new ministers with a short biog

That's right rainyday; everybody in FF or the PD's is bad and everybody in DL, er, I mean Labour, is bad.

Life IS that simple.

Now we agree on things.....

Complacency

There seems to be a level of complacency about the dangers we face now that Willie is defending us. Think of leaders with moustaches - Hitler, Stalin - and this guy has one to die for.

Don't be at all surprised to wake up one morning to hear that a division of the Irish Armed Forces has invaded Rockall. :D

Re: Complacency

Ah come on Purp - Stop avoiding the issue. There are some individuals in FF who I actually have some respect for, even if I disagree with their philosophy - Brian Cowan is a smart, competent guy - Dick Roche did good work on the EU presidency. But I really haven't seen Harney do anything to impress. Have you.

Re: Complacency

She and her party have lowered taxes and kept them low ......
that's good enough for me.

Re: Complacency

Forget her party - what has SHE done to show that she will make a good Minister of Health?

Re: Complacency

Think of leaders with moustaches - Hitler, Stalin - and this guy has one to die for...

Yeah, but you should check out his mascara, up close ...MUCH scarier! :eek

Re: what good?

So what has Mary privatised? I'm not talking about general PD policy here - but what has Mary H done herself?

Re: what good?

She is a minister in a government who sets policy that is implemented by the department that she is over. Stop being pedantic rainyday, this government is heavily influenced by her thinking.
In my own area the R&D and technology funding that go with her philosophy of a knowledge bases economy have helped many Irish companies.
