I am from South America. I married a British Citizend. We married in Ireland. He work in Ireland for more than 10 years and paid taxes. We had a Child then we moved to SA. We got a house in Ireland and UK we rented out and my husband pay taxes in both countries. My husband died in South America. 2 years ago. I am lost I don't know what to do. My son is 6 years old. We do not have family in Ireland or UK. What is rhe first thing to do? Would appreciate advices in case someone got property in both countries IRL & UK and pay taxes. Thanks.

Hi Amaria

Sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. Presumably you wish to secure the houses in Ireland and the UK for the benefit of yourself and your son. Gathering paperwork is part of the process.

Here are some questions that you will need to answer:

Did your husband make a will?
Do you have your marriage certificate?
Do you have a death certificate for your husband?
Do you have your husbands personal files? Passport? Tax return records? Bank statements? Pension statements?

In terms of the house in Ireland, the best place to start is with the firm of solicitors that you and your husband used when it was being purchased. They would be best placed in terms of advising you on the next steps, with regards to the house, and other assets that may form part of your husband's estate.

btw, just to clarify, was your son born in Ireland?

In some cultures, orphan is used when a child's father is dead.

Hello TLO

Thank you so much foe the advise.
I contated the solicitor, yes there is a will, we contaed the bank and I will pay taxes under my name. My son was born in Ireland.
Just to clirifief. The houses are small properties, one in Ireland one in uk. I need to learn how thi gs are to regrads of paying tax. Wish to hear from another widow in the group. Or someone that hve prooertiea in both countries. Thanks

You do not need to talk to another widow.

You should speak to a solicitor who will make sure that the properties are put into your name.
You should speak to an accountant who will sort out the tax for you.
