What type of cutlery set to buy

So we think we've reached the point in our lives where we need a nice cutlery complete set for the rare occasions when we have guests over for nice dinners. Can anyone advise what to get - is it worth spending a fortune or is there a cheap option that still looks and lasts well.

thanks suellen, so is it really worth spending that much, are you getting more than just the brandname?
 
Small point to consider. If you plan to wash it in a dishwasher, check that the cutlery fits in the little slots on the cutlery holder. Most "nice" sets will but if you're spending good money on it you'll want to take care of it when washing (or do it by hand ofcourse).
 
A number of years ago we got NOVA from Newbridge to go with our 10 place setting of tranquil glen, they are readily available in many stores, we can replace or add to them whenever we like, They have the full range from desert forks to stake knives, they are only stainless and not too expensive, look what tranquil glen is worth today http://www.replacements.com/webquote/N__TRG.htm (here) and We still use them everyday,

Hi Toby,

If its for special occasions and not just everyday use then IMHO that set would be worth it. I don't have any experience/knowledge of the brand Viners but they do look nice. I have Newbridge but very rarely use them.
 
I have Stellar Old Westminster and every time I take it out my guests comment on it. Its like to old fashioned sets with the big white handle knives.

If you google it a few different places sell it and 44 piece set are £65 approx which is great value.

They do say dishwasher proof but I have never put this in dishwasher, handwash with fairy, dry and back in its box when occasion is over.
