What are your favourite Google Gadgets?

Gadgets powered by Google are miniature objects made by Google users like you that offer cool and dynamic content that can be placed on any page on the web.

Gadgets might come in handy when you're at work (to-do list, currency converter, calendar), at school (calculator, Wikipedia, translation tool), or just passing time (news, blogs, games). You can add gadgets you like to iGoogle and, if you have Google Desktop installed, you can also [broken link removed].

Footiefox and the Adobe gadget. I'm sure Mouse Gestures is useful but I never use it.

Re: What are your favourite Google Gadgets?

I don't think they are gadgets, but I honestly think that maps.google.com and Google Eath are the two most amazing uses for the internet and IT in general in a *very* long time. Two previous holders of that title would have been http and before that spreadsheets.

These things came along and made what had previously been either impossible (seeing a picture of your cousins house on Easter Island) or a lot of manual work (calculating the ROI on a project over 60 years) a task that could be completed in seconds.

Google Earth and Google Maps get my vote too. When they first became available, I must have lost the best part of a working week... 'flying' over the Alps/Rift Valley/Grand Canyon/Amazon basin, etc.

Not to mention the fun I had emailing friends and family aerial views of their houses/back gardens! :D

Re: What are your favourite Google Gadgets?

This blog from Paul Stamatiou explains better than I what I mean by "Google IG" (Googel Internet Gadgets) on your Google Personalised Homepage.

In particular notice his home page and the various gadgets on it. (For instance he has a gmail gadget which shows the 10 most recent mails in his inbox). Note also that he has two tabs (Home and Tech), I have several tabs including one called "blank" on which there are no gadgets at all.

With the advent of dozens of customizable startpages from the likes of Google IG to Netvibes, Internet users have a big decision to make when it comes to setting their homepage. Long are the days of simply using Google or Yahoo! as your homepage. Some prefer news sites or Wikipedia while others indulge in a purely academic homepage with something like Ninja Words. The more sociable ones might opt for Twitter as their homepage.
Which homepage do you use, and why?
I use Google IG. I’ve tried just about every customizable startpage but it just isn’t the same. Google IG’s look and feel has grown on me. Fast loading, no ads, pure content.

So that's who I was waving up at it.:D

iGoogle is a start page tool where you can aggregate all the Google resources you use on your online desktop, eg gMail, Google Calendar.

Since I posed this question last year google have remamed this offering iGoogle.

A year later there are thousands of items you can place on your iGoogle start page. see iGoogle Directory.

What are your favourites?

I like the currency converter and the 5 most recent emails.

I have never used google earth or maps but then I usually have work to do.
