What are we watching on TV?

Gangster Number 1 - Netflix - Tells the story of a low life troublemaker in the 1960s London morphing into a lower life gangster throughout the 1990s. It’s a low budget film with more flaws than its murders. Not an entertaining watch and the best part was seeing the credits at the end. Save yourself 100 minutes and give it a miss.

Apparently last night was first time RTE showed the Oscars live.

Am catching up on the recording.

Started brightly with some tunes from Wicked.

The opening skits from Conan O'Brien were hit and miss then it was slow going.

But the James Bond segment was good. 1 hour 25 minutes into the RTE broadcast.
 
Enjoying Virdie on BBC 1 at the minute, very different from your normal British cop drama in that it is almost an all Asian cast and set in Bradford in an almost all Asian culture within British culture. Quite dark (and not for the squeamish if you don't like creep crawlies)

Gave up on Paradise on Disney + after episode 2, found it very far fetched at that stage.
 
You wait ages for a train and then two come along at once.

Michael Portillo's Continental Railway Journeys returns Monday 10th March on BBC2.
He starts in the Croatian city of Pula, a place James Joyce fled from calling it a "naval Siberia". Michael's focus will be on the Roman amphitheatre located there but let's hope Joyce gets a mention.

Alice Roberts Ancient Greece by Train starts Saturday 15th March on Channel 4.

At Your Service - RTE 1 - Francis and John Brennan advise people opening or changing a business. Tonight’s episode shows the O’Carroll family hoping to renovate a premises in Tralee into a three star hotel. This is the O’Carroll’s (a successful business family) first venture into the hospitality arena.

The family consider themselves to be good business people and they are. But, Francis and John go into the whole business of running a hotel. The pitfalls are many and lots of stuff circles the O’Carroll’s inexperience in hospitality despite their good business prowess.

Target dates, costs, staff hiring, management, aspirations etc are focused upon. The main message is one person to drive decisions and once a hotel is opened, it’s open forever. The O’Carrolls are customer driven, but much crops up that they had not foreseen. The Brennans are excellent, but I’m not sure if the O’Carrolls realise the depth of their new venture. Excellent television and more informative than Dragons Den.

European Athletics Championships

1 x gold in the women's 3,000mtrs for Sarah Healy, superb performance and a PB.

2 x bronze, Kate O'Connor and Mark English.

Apologies, Dundalk native, Kate [EDIT] from Belfast warrants special mention as the athletes in the gold & silver medal-winning places are professionals as is the athlete in 4th place behind her. She's a student, coached by her Dad and a group of enthusiasts. An extra special well done.

I got tired seeing Cork hammering Clare and turned on the athletics just in time to see these three brilliant medal winners....
 
All in quick succession - yeah, it seemed to be raining medals on us there for a while. I shudda said "European Indoor Athletics Championships" or maybe even the "Dutch Indoor Athletics Championships"!

Whatever happened to suave , hugely literate and highly amusing raconteurs like these two men who held audiences in the palm of their hand ?
In another sign of changing times Richard Burton must have smoked 10 cigarettes during the course of a 45 minute interview!
 
They came from a time when the job of an entertainer was to engage an audience and, God forbid, entertain. The name of the game, the entertainment industry, where actors, athletes, ball-game players, pugilists, dancers, strummers, and singers produced entertaining output, stuff worth paying for. Audiences weren't there to be preached at (well maybe not true in America), told what was wrong in the lives they led, to be berated, or to hang on the latest words of wisdom from the great gurus. Thrill me, excite me, make me laugh or cry, change my feelings, give me a different perspective, but don't beat me up if I don't adopt it, and get paid to do it.
 
I don't watch the Late Late that much now but one of the reasons is that the interviews can be too short. Just when it's getting interesting they plug their book/movie and then they are gone and it's over
 
1883 has dropped on the RTE player, and will air Tuesdays on RTE2.
While technically a prequel to Kevin Costner series Yellowstone, you don't have to have watched it to follow 1883.
It is an epic "wagon trail" Western miniseries, with excellent performances from Sam Elliot and newcomer Isabel May.
 
I enjoyed the LateLate Show last night, reuniting that wonderful group of players was a stroke of genius (by a Cork man by all accounts!) They don't seem to have aged a day, even Charlie the bagman looked just as I remembered him. The show/segment was waay too short to properly thank them for what they did for the country from the late 80s through the early 90s. Thanks lads, great to see you again, commiserations for the teammates you lost and for the loss of El Gereralissimo Jack, one of the greatest sporting Irishmen of all time.
 
Have just started watching it last night. I have only seen the first episode and it looks powerful alright..
 
Documentary on the Hothouse Flowers repeated today on RTE1, I missed it first time round.

Some nice tidbits of information... they managed to get 125,000 punts from the European Community culture fund to film the video for Don't Go across Europe. That was then played as the interval act for Eurovison 1988 in Dublin.
The expedition was also helped by Ryanair loan of a jet... hence the frequent appearances of same in the video.
