But they also lost money through their Irish subsidiaries, didn't they?

Didn't the UK taxpayer effectively bail out Ulster Bank in Ireland?

Yep - the amount stated in the media was specifically for the Irish arms of those banks, but many Irish borrowers buying international property were on the books of their UK operations, so the actual losses to Irish borrowers was a lot higher than just the figure of the local operations.
