VRT Exemption - Can't lend car for 12 months?

Hey folks,

Can anyone clarify this for me. Just moved down here permanently from the North and got our VRT exemption issued no problem. However, the VRO guy mentioned that I can't 'lend' the car to anybody for 12 months - Does this include my wife? Not much point in having a family car if we can't share the driving - Can't afford a second car either. Any ideas, or should I just call the VRO for them to clarify?

Hey man,

Twas simple enough. Have a read through this page first:

The folks in the VRO (who were very helpful) will give you an actual checklist of all the documentation you'll need, like stuff relating to your old address like bank statements, and stuff relating to your move down here, like proof of purchase of a property, new job contract etc.

The VRO folks will also want to see the car and confirm its chassis and engine numbers. But there was no interview or anything.

Only took them a week and half to get back to me by phone with my Irish reg details and said they'd be posting out my details for taxing the car.

I don't think I would be too worried about wife driving the car or anyone else for that matter.

Just selling the car within 12 months is the problem.

As lon as the car is taxed and indured who is going to know.
 
I agree with Frank.
I brought my car with me from the north. I was just told I wasn't allowed to sell my car for 12 months. I suspect they don't want anyone avoiding taxes or making a quick buck.

I think he meant 1- can not sell it 2-can not lend you to anybody not directly related to you , i.e your neighbour....
Put "Mr and Mrs inigomontoya" on the docs and you/she is ok.
 
If the Customs & Excise find that your car is driven by someone else they can confiscate the car there and then. I have come across C&E checkpoints where they are sniffing for red (marked and illegal) diesel.
