Hi,

As a sole trader am I required to charge VAT to individuals/businesses in the UK for services? I work in the web design business so the invoices are for services and no physical product is shipped. I've looked a t a few websites but haven't found a clear answer on this.

Thanks.

If you aren't 100% sure ask Revenue :)

Rule of thumb is that you shouldn't charge VAT to any EU VAT registered business based outside Ireland.

Isn't this 'fourth schedule services' so you would apply VAT as opposed to NOT applying VAT?

If the client is VAT registered -- and the onus is on you to know that he is - you can check the VAT number EU wide on this link.

No rule of thumb required - you don't apply VAT to transactions with foreign VAT-registered customers. If you are buying from them you don't pay VAT either. Sometimes you have to remind them of this. It's simple enough.

Thanks for all the help. I think the general consensus is that VAT is only chargeable if the person/business is NOT registered for VAT.

Thanks again.
