Have planned a trip to Vancouver in August - will be there for 2 days before taking Alaska cruise with RCCL (Skagway, Juneau, Icy Strait), then returning for 4 days before coming home. Have booked hotel in Vancouver but would welcome any suggestions on activities, sights, shopping, trips while we are there (4 adults). Thanks

Vancouver is lovely. Weather can be crappy though, similar to this godforsaken place!!

Anyway, a trip out to Vancouver Island is nice. If you're lucky there will be something on in the park near the river. Dunno what the name of it is but they have concerts and shít regularly in the summer.

Do you like playing poker? Then head out to a casino and play a few hands. Cos it's in Canadian Dollars you don't lose as much cos you still play the same numbers!!

Is it better to buy Canadian Dollars and convert to US dollars in Canada or just buy Canadian Dollars?

That's brilliant info, thank you I appreciate any suggestions etc. I wouldn't have known about the US dollars being accepted in Canada.

I found these to be good and they are all in the north of the city:
Vancouver Aquarium if you want to see the beluga whales perform together with seals, sea lions etc. Actaully pretty good acquarium.
The Capilano Suspension Bridge, it is cool wooded area with a bridge 450 feet across and 230 feet up above river.

Grouse Mountain. Go up in the cable car and take in the views of the city, the parks, the bridges and the coastline. Great views of city.

Visit Stanley park and just wander around.

In the city itself:
Vancouver Lookout at Harbour Centre 360 revolving thingy me bob, with great views of city and down near harbour.

Visit Science World, especially if you have kids or you are abig kid yourself. They had Bond display when I was there.
Visit China town area, the food and the markets are differentto everything else.

Take a float plane ride from harbour area.
Hope these ideas are some help.

BTW Skagway will probably be very crowded. When I got there by road I was greeted by 6 cruise ships all of which had deposited their passengers into the town.

The cruise up the coast line should be cool. Keep and eye out for whales.

Hi all,

Just doing a search for info on Vancouver and came accross this thread that is very useful.

We're going to Vancouver in June/July on our honeymoon and am wondering if anyone can recommend a central enough hotel in Vancouver to stay in. We will be there only for about 3 days then we go off on an Alaskan Cruise then back to Vancouver and hope to hire a camper van to go to Calgary.

Would anyone have any recommendations on where to hire a camper van? I believe it may be cheaper to do from here rather than waiting till we get there.

Would appreciate any info you may think may be useful. Thank you.

What kind of level hotel? How much would you like to spend. I can recommend many depending on your budget. I live here so know all of them well.

As for renting your RV, unless you are getting it as part of package as part of your trip it will be cheaper to organise renting it in Vancouver. As a rule of thumb renting a vehicle is cheaper to do once you get to Canada, remember you'll be paying CAD$ not in euros, which will present a significant discount. Your best bet is to check online prices in Ireland and then call around, you'll also have more variety of companies to choose from when you get here.

Thats great, I'll try rent one when we get there then.

We would like a hotel for approximately 100-150 euro a night. Something central would be great.

If anyone has any recommendations, it'd be great as I've looked online a bit and the hotels either seem a good bit away from the city centre and if in the city centre, very expensive.

Staying downtown will be expensive, but why limit yourself to there, public transport is fast frequent and reasonably cheap and taxis are plentiful. As for downtown in your budget you could start with the Holiday Inn on Howe. Its basic enough but should fall into your budget. However a few pennies more would get you into the Westin Grand for around $240 a night. Its an all suite hotel.
