Uk cheque, no account

My son's grandmother sent him a sterling/pound cheque from UK. My son is 10, only has a post office and credit union savings accounts in his name. ,Neither would allow him to lodge it as its not in euro. Will he have to open a current account with main bank or?

Our local Credit Union will accept Sterling and US dollars cheques.

If it's a small amount it might be easier (and maybe nicer) for her to write an IOU note to be cashed at the next visit to her.

If it's for a few hundred and not crossed, possibly check with your own bank if you can lodge it to your account.

Had a similar situation with overseas cheque; it worked out around €100.

Nothing said to child about difficulty re cheque.

Parent put cash in child's savings a/c & child sent thank you letter.

As I recall it was a one off, so there was nothing to be gained by making a fuss with overseas relative.
