Tracing where direct debit from CC is going?

A direct debit of E9.95 a month for 'Accidental Death Cover' is being taken from the credit card of a recently deceased relative. The family want to stop the payments so they can close the account.

The only documentation they can find refering to 'Accidental Death Cover' dates back to 2002 (also E9.95 a month) - it's from Stonebridge International Insurance Services (underwriters?). There's a reference at the bottom of the document to Bank of Ireland Insurance Services.

The family rang BoI Insurance about it but they said they had no record of the relative's name/address. Stonebridge (the UK sister company of AEGON Direct Marketing Services) are advertised on the BoI website, but this BoI person didn't seem to know anything about them. She said to ring BoI credit cards to find out where the payment is going but they said all that is showing up is 'Accidental Death Cover', with no company name.

Stonebridge's website redirects to AEGON. The family got a phone number from it but an unhelpful chap said he had no record either of relative, although he gave the impression he didn't look too hard. They're going to ring back again tomorrow.

Any tips on how to get this blasted thing sorted out? Thanks.

Re: Tracing where direct debit from CC is going??

I would phone your credit card company and ask them to identify the merchant account for the transaction. Once you identify the merchant, you should also look for a refund of any premiums deducted since death.

Thanks for that MugsGame, we'll try the CC company again. I couldn't understand why they couldn't (wouldn't?) identify the company for us, surely the family is entitled to know? We gave them the number accompanying the payment (not sure what you call it) but they still said all that was showing up was 'Accidental Death Cover' - the fella said "maybe that's the name of the company" Will try again tomorrow.

If you don't know about this insurance and you don't have records than why not DISPUTE the charge?

Who ever is behind this charge most surley will contact you if you reverse the charge.

That however is only an option if the unfortunate death of the individual you are talking here was not acidential because that might have consequences for the cover.

The Direct Debit scheme for Ireland (as operated by the Irish Retail Electronic Payments Clearing Company, a company under the IPSO umbrella does not cover credit cards.

There is in fact no direct debit scheme for credit cards. What purports as a direct debit on a credit card is in fact an agreement which you have entered into with the payee (the insurance co in this case), to allow them to charge multiple items to your account.

However, as with direct debits, if you want to cancel this, you should notify your bank that you have withdrawn your mandate to this company, and that future payments are not authorised by you.
