A friend of mine is just about to set up his own mathematical consultancy business and wants to know what title to give himself on his business card as a sole trader. He had thought of using "owner" but I thought this didn't sound right. Any suggestions, please? Many Thanks.....

Who are his competitors in this business? What kind of employers would be looking to hire him, e.g. companies? research agencies (such as the CSO)? What does he specialise in?

In previous jobs where I've had business cards, there was no titles (too many re-orgs!!!).

I would suggest he should include academic/professional qualifications & accreditations.

If as a sole trader, there is no company name & description, then I would just leave it as "Joe Smith, Mathematical Consultant"

He should choose a title specific enough so that people know what he does, but not too narrow that might eliminate opportunities.

If he doesn't know what title to put on the card, then don't put any title on the card. It is his own start-up company, so he is going to be doing a variety number of roles himself, so whatever he puts on a card won't match what he is actually doing a lot of the time anyhow. Just company name and contact details are fine.
