Certain. I've seen two of those godawful Lexus 4x4s as taxis around the Milltown area. One in blue (plate no 10k+). Cannot claim to have seen the ML in taxi service. Yet. Plenty of S-classes though.

> Rainyday: If it is worth the driver working nights, then he/she will do so.

Don't necessarily agree. If they are making enough doing a few hours during the day, then why bother with the hassle of nights - even with the incentivised fares? If the business was not there at other times (ie daylight), there would be swarms of taxis fighting for business through the night.

Also, you mention 'if it is worth it the driver will work'. Unacceptable for a public service to be relying on the whim of the service providers.

taxi vs buses

A public Service is just that. It's subsidized by taxpayers to provide a public service and not just work routes which are profitable nor just work times which are profitable. In order to do this the buses run at preset times and along preset routes, and you get to travel with other members of the public. This is the difference between a bus service and a taxi service.

A taxi provides transport for those who can afford it, and therefore only does profitable runs, taking individuals door to door at a time of their choosing.

Must be two pretty dumb taxi drivers out there so. High petrol consumption, VERY high road tax, high maintenance costs - and still limited to 4 passengers, same as a Ford Focus or Toyota Corolla.

Not really true Rainy , a good deal of Taxi drivers with exclusive vehicles do Chauffeur drive work, this is much more profitable, for instance a one way trip to the Airport from town would set you back €90 and then its all gravy from there. They then fill in with Taxi work but only a few can afford executive vehicles, while the rest of them have to pimp the streets chasing teenagers for fiver's.

Re:>>

Just imagine, buying the car of your dreams and getting to right off the cost against tax over three years!
You don't need to work in the Revenue Commissioners to see that as a good deal. But there again maybe it helps?

Re: Re:>>

The individual fares for the chauffeur jobs may well be higher, but the quantity of jobs is lower, so the overall income levels out. I reckon your buddy in Milltown in the nice new jeep just got the taxi plate to get access to the bus lanes.
