Hello,

I'm in the process of buying a small 2nd hand house in limerick but the guy I was counting on for the structural survey has pulled out. Has anyone any experience with a good value, trustworthy surveyor in the Limerick area?

I've been told to contact Gileece, McDonald and O'Shaughnessy but they are charging well above the odds 400 (excl vat) so am worried about
1) getting ripped off
2) getting a useless lump who sits down has a cup of tea and ignores problems (i've seen this happen)

Any help would be really appreciated

€400 doesn't sound over the odds for what you want. At the end of the day if your surveyor signs off on a house which later happens to have an obvious defect you will want to sue him! So the engineer you engage should be charging an appropriate fee given the exposure involved. Whoever you engage should give you a written definition of the scope of his survey etc.
