Surround Ideas for Fitting Stove

I have a new fireplace in my kitchen and am fitting a wood burning stove in it just as a room heater - it won't be completetly back in the fireplace.

I need some suggestions as to what I can line the fireplace opening with - can't afford granite or slate (got a quote for €700 for 3 sides of inside of fireplace and hearth stone in slate - supply only)- I did see the firepanels but thought they were a bit manky?

Can I use normal tiles - ??? Anything else?? Can I just plaster the fireplace opening and paint it?? Or will it crumble withe the heat -

I have the required space either side of the stove?

Need help as the stove is sittign in the middle of the floor for the last 6 weeks and driving me insane??
 
You could just plaster it but it would be proan to cracking. one way would be to use a nice polished or hammered sheet of Copper. not expencive and easy to work. did it for my sister in her house and it worked out well. We lifted the stove on some polished granite with the copper behind it. Looks well to.
 
I got the piece cut to size in Jas Healy (Brass-Founders-Engrs) Ltd in Bluebell ind est Dublin. Very heplfull lads, No connection just happy customer.
Make sure to get a heavy guage like 2.5 or 3mm. I cut out the hole for the flue with a jigsaw held the whole thing in place with fire silicone and sealed around the flue with some fire rope.

Hi There,

we have been trying to work out what to put behind our newly purchased stand alone stove! We thought of black tile but on seeing a picture did not like it.

Is there any chance that you could please post or send via email a picture of the stove with the copper behind it, we really like the idea but would love to see an actual photo.

Did you have any problems with the copper conducting heat into the plaster work.

Has anybody used fire resistant paint on the wall behind and at the sides of a stove? I have a lime plaster finish but would like to finish off with some kind of colour to blend in with the rest of the room.
 
Sorry texas ranger, don't have a picture.
Used some high heat silicone between the copper and the plaster and no cracks as I think the silicone acts as an expansion joint of sorts.

Fire resistant paint, will the paint be in contact with the flames? High heat so perhaps radiator paint might be better?
 
You can plaster and use ceramic tiles, depending on the type you want it doesn't have to cost a lot.
