Sumup app Taxi Scam?

Very unlikely to be a scam as you would have had the taxi plate number and could easily report him.
It’s possibly a scam.

It’s a case of he-said-she-said and the driver could drive could just reimburse everyone challenges it. Many won’t and driver could collect both card payment and cash.

Exactly! Think of the amount of people on a Saturday night that would just assume there was a problem, pay in cash and head home only to find out that they paid twice.

If you questions the taxi driver and take his details, he just has to refund the transaction and wait a couple of days for you to pay him back. A pretty simple scam that would catch a lot of people out

It's not remotely the same.

Most shops would have proper terminals which match the transaction on the phone.

I always think of sumup as a bit Micky Mouse. Can the taxi driver not have a more reliable way of getting paid by credit card?

Exactly. Anyone who travels quite a bit will have had this happen to them. Sitting in a restaurant, you go to pay for the meal and your transaction is declined. You then get a text message from bank of Ireland asking you if this is a legitimate transaction, contact this number etc....

The restaurant will hand you a declined transaction receipt as proof.

Very strange? It was actually refunded by the taxi driver an hour later?

Processed at 20:59
Refunded at 22:01
Not necessarily refunded by the driver, but due to all legs of the transaction not successfully completing within the allotted time. The driver terminal will only wait a limited amount of time for a confirmation of the transaction being successful after which time it will assume it failed. The bank may have approved the transaction and so debited the money from your account only for the confirmation to miss the driver terminal's timeout due to transmission delays. It's only after the merchant's system confirms the terminal time out to the bank that bank will reverse the transaction.
